and didn't the windies have bowlers as captains during their hey days?

Garfield Sobers 1964/65-1971/72 was a cricket all-rounder, excelling at both batting and bowling
Rohan Kanhai 1972/73-1973/74 rated as perhaps the best batsman
Clive Lloyd 1974/75-1977/78, 1979/80-1984/85 powerful middle-order batsman and occasional medium-pace bowler
Alvin Kallicharran 1977/78-1978/79 elegant, watchful batting style
Deryck Murray 1979/80 he played as a wicketkeeper
Viv Richards 1980, 1983/84-1991 was a very powerful right-handed batsman with an extremely attacking style
Gordon Greenidge 1987/88 was a feared opening batsman for the West Indies.
Desmond Haynes 1989/90-1990/91 One of the greatest batsman to ever play for the West Indies
Richie Richardson 1991/92-1995 was a flamboyant batsman
Courtney Walsh 1993/94-1997/98 served as the "stock" bowler
Brian Lara 1996/97-1999/2000, 2002/03-2004, 2006-2007 one of the greatest batsmen in the history of the game

I just did that out of interest but it ends up showing that for all there fast bowling talent the West Indies have had very few bowlers as captains, so maybe we have got something with the observation that a bowler does not make a good captain. In fact out of all those captains only Walsh was an outright bowler, with Sobers and Lloyd all rounders.

Thanks for sharing. He really rose in stature.
Wish we can have rugby managed like they do cricket concerning the polotics.
I have great respect for all our cricket players, all deserve to be there, maybe not all performing at peak but overall the balance counts as one fails the others compensate. Remember the days when if we lost our fourth wicket we were ..well... dead.

So this will be KP's first team:

1 Andrew Strauss
2 Alastair Cook
3 Ian Bell
4 Kevin Pietersen (capt)
5 Paul Collingwood
6 Andrew Flintoff
7 Tim Ambrose (wk)
8 Stuart Broad
9 Steve Harmison
10 James Anderson
11 Monty Panesar

They brought back their best batsmen in Broad for Vaughan and replaced sidearse with Steve Harmison, probably hoping the 'lets bowl a bunch of wide balls and fool them with straight one' trick works for them.

very well written I thought.

From Cricinfo:

"One year younger, but in captaincy terms, on another level of experience, the man that Pietersen once dismissed as a "muppet" is quietly plotting the most publicly humiliating of retorts. Smith's sublime 154 not out at Edgbaston has been virtually overlooked in the chaos of the past week, but one day it will be acknowledged as the performance of a man in utter command of his game, his team and the series situation. Smith is at the absolute zenith of his captaincy career, and with Australia looming in December this year, his focus is sure to remain unwavering. Five years ago, he sent Nasser Hussain packing from the England captaincy in almost identical circumstances ... and followed up with a crushing innings victory in Vaughan's first Test in charge. His share of that performance at Lord's was the small matter of 259 chanceless runs. When he pauses to reflect on the task ahead, that fact will loom large in Pietersen's thoughts."

Yip, KP must be feeling the pressure now!!! Apparently Sky news broke from regular programming when it was publicly announced that KP would captain England.... No pressure... This is going to be a very severe test of his character, never mind a 5 day test against high flying SA... You think Saffers are fickle fans, try the English...

The one day series may be bad for him.
We should win it 4-1 at least.

^I agree.In fact i can't think of 1 specialist bowler who ever was a captain;oh wait, Pollock...

Not sure that I would class Pollock as a specialist bowler - more a batting allrounder. Some friends and I were discussing this a week or two ago, and couldn't think of any specialist bowling captains - except Kumble.

Anyway, cricket today. :)

About three hours to go. Cant wait.

This was written about Pietersen after yesterdays press conference, does not inspire too much confidence.

"For all his bravado, there are several aspects of the leadership that will still be a mystery to Pietersen come Thursday morning. He had put little thought to where he himself will be fielding, for instance, and though he was looking forward with pride to the moment he walks out to toss up with Graeme Smith, he admitted that he has little idea about how to read a pitch. I really dislike Pietersen. When he first came onto the scene i really like him due to him giving it back to SA. The story was was nice, how we overlooked him and now he is punishing us. i supported him then. I could relate to his story.

...over the years, i have really really started to hate the oke. His manner he carries himself, his arrogance is on a another level!!!!! I hope he fails as a captain.

Some ineteresting questions were asked in his interview yesterday:

They asked him about the pitch?
He was clueless on how to read a pitch, he said he doesnt know.

They asked him if England will restore some pride and win the last test?
He said, that England cannot expect miracles, that we have to work on rebuilding the team.

BOLLOCKS!!! He knows he is gonna lose, he knows its going to be crazy tough to beat us.

I hope the boys wipe them in the test to complete a whitewash in the test series, and do the same in the one days.

I thought he talked waaay too much at that press conference. And all the k@k little nicknames, like harmy, sidys and mooresy.

And what a t1t for admitting he does not know how to read a pitch :D

Shane Warne, would've been good had it not been for...
Did OK in the IPL and for Hampshire.

Wasim, Waqar and Imran weren't too bad for Pakistan.

Vettori not doing too well for NZ yet.

Not like he was given all that much time to prepare.
It is a huge job, even more so off the pitch, and he just got married.
He won't have much time to work on his own game anymore, and its inevitable that he'll start to slip at some stage if he doesn't get a break now and again.

Yup, all the more reason to not talk so much!! It took Smith at least 3 years to learn that though...
