I'm getting insane latency on CW for a few days now. It's not always high - it jumps around sporadically.

Not experiencing the latency on my free 1GB Afrihost account. I used the CW and AH DNS settings respectively.

Edit: And CW being its normal self:

My connection seems to be oscillating between the first and second trace route on CW.

Then you still have the problem from that particular timezone. Usage data is not sent on the hour. For every connection it happens at a different timezone...

Not necessarily. If you advertise your products with free data between 12-6AM, and set your actual period between 23:00 or 23:30, you'd then at least have 30 or 60 minutes leeway to minimise the risk of delayed usage reporting for those already authenticated, you'd just be pre-empting the worst case while still ensuring customers who have already authenticated and have a delay in their usage collection to still maintain a 12-6AM 'free' download window.

Or am I missing something.
CW when is the portal going to be up and running? These 4:30am emails aren't cool.

Any plans for maybe an iOS/android app in the near future?

Lol only read above post now... App would be great though

Let's just wait for the portal first, before even thinking about an app :P

With respect to changing midnight data times: we have a potential solution we're busy with to accommodate for the Telkom accounting record delays. Changing times outright changes costings and therefore will not be discussed in public...

I think they are messing around in our exchange (373/374) as my son has been bitching about latency while gaming for the last few days.

I hope so. I would need to run my free Web Africa and Afrihost accounts for longer to see if their latency also jumps all over the place.

Appreciate you addressing it. Thank you.

Is the best workaround for avoiding these issues to run downloads 0030-0530, or even 0100-0500?

Great, thanks.

You'll probably find that data at 06:30 would even still be counted as 'free' as usage data isn't collected on the hour. But starting your downloads a little later (safest at 01:00) would be best, until they apply the workaround. If you want that extra hour, restart your router.

We had an issue with the support system between 3pm and 4pm which is now resolved.

No network problems. There are however continued Telkom faults and network upgrades across the country at the moment and this evening which may cause isolated issues in those specific areas...

Hi Dj,

Do you maybe have an ETA as to when we could expect access to the customer portal? I'm aware that only some customers have access during the trialling stage.

Thanks.

An article here got me a bit worried about something. I'd appreciate advice on whether it's a problem and the best way to do things with CW.

I need ADSL at my apartment for 6 months of each year. My plan was to keep a Telkom landline permanently active and to subscribe to the CW ADSL line + Premium uncapped data bundle between about the beginning of November to the end of April the following year. This pattern would repeat each year.

My concern comes from a quote from an article last year on MyBroadband (http://mybroadband.co.za/news/adsl/...line-transfer-policy-will-cause-downtime.html) about new Telkom ADSL line procedures for resellers. It says...

This is where the end-user’s DSL service will be discontinued and the end-user will have to apply for a new service with a new provider, should they wish to continue with a DSL service. In this instance the port may be re-allocated in the interim and the end-user will only be accommodated where there is a port available again.

This makes me worry that, with my original plan of completely removing ADSL from my landline at the end of April each year, I might then have a problem applying to get ADSL re-enabled on my land line in early November because of lack of ports.

Is this a genuine issue or do most exchanges have adequate ADSL ports to service the demand? I'll be in Cape Town CBD and I'm guessing that Darling Street would be my closest exchange.

If I am risking not being able to re-order ADSL some years because of port issues then what is the cheapest option that I could get from Crystal Web if I kept things active all year? I'd obviously drop the data package for the 6 months that I'm away but I don't see any stand-alone ADSL line options listed on the site (like the ones that Vox have) to keep the ADSL service/port active.

The option to drop the ADSL line down to Telkoms absolute lowest price 1MB line would be the ideal since I assume that would keep the port allocated and it would then be a case of upgrading and downgrading speeds in November/April rather than total disconnects and reconnects.

I suppose that if I can't do it all via CW then another option is to find another ISP just for my ADSL where I can get stand-alone ADSL at 1MB and 8MB speeds to flip between the speeds but that ends up with my having to deal with Telkom for the land line, another ISP for the ADSL line, and CW for the data package. Messy but doable I suppose.

Getting landline + ADSL from Telkom and data only from CW is also an option but the lowest speed ADSL line Telkom sells direct to the consumer is 2MB and I also wanted to be dealing with CW for the stuff I'd actually be needing customer service on (ADSL + data) because I don't trust Telkom to process disconnect/reconnect or speed change orders efficiently, especially if I'm sometimes requesting them remotely from a foreign country so ADSL direct from Telkom isn't an entirely satisfactory solution.

There is no such thing as standalone DSL - it is always tied to the voice line, and all ISPs are subject to this requirement, and all end users.

Your only option is to downgrade the line to 1Mbps for the 6 months to keep the port assigned - there are no guarantees in this respect. I can tell you what % of ports are available if you send me your Telkom tel number...

Up for limited number of customers. Into meeting shortly again, and will have more info. Will have the basic portal up though, don't worry. This week will not be like last...

1 day left ;)

Can the guys on the test portal post screenshots I'm really amped! Hope it beats Afrihost, been missing their client tools

I seriously need access to gauge my usage.. really thought this would have gone in by now, at least a temp setup. Having to request usage reports is becoming annoying.

It should be sent each day as well without having to request anything...

Thanks DJ. I understand there's no bare DSL. When I was talking about stand-alone ADSL I meant without any data package attached to it but was always assuming that the R180-ish per month land (voice) line into my apartment is left permanently enabled. The ADSL layer has some chance of being turned on and off fairly quickly and easily I assume but the thought of fighting with Telkom every year to get the voice line installed and then disconnected 6 months later is too much pain to contemplate so my voice line will a 12 month a year subscription, it's just that for 6 months of each year I had planned for it to really be just that - voice only and not even used for that.

I don't have a Telkom voice number yet, I'm waiting until next Friday to get the application in when I get to Cape Town. I've had issues with Telkom in the past and prefer to do it face-to-face in a shop so I have someone to go and coplain to without waiting ages on hold queues. I could PM you a number for a shop on the ground floor of my apartment block though which I assume is pretty much guaranteed to be on the same exchange if that helps to get some idea of exchange loading.

Does your mention of downgrading to 1MB mean that CW could offer me a stand-alone (as in without any data package attached) 1MB ADSL line to keep ADSL service active for the 6 months when I'm not there so as not to lose the exchange port?

Yes, but we'll charge normal retail costs on this during these times, and our discounted rate once the data package activates...
