Crystal Web (NEW ISP) ADSL Feedback

As long as it's "speedy", I don't mind :)

Speaking of which, I am still curious about daytime P2P at the moment. I know it will be heavily shaped. With OpenField, I used to get something during the day at least. That has slowed down to a trickle, like a drip set to the slowest speed. I would like to know what the general experience has been like so far on that for others on CW so far?

Our current early-bird adopters are effectively unshaped as a gift from us to you for taking the leap of faith in us. There is some very minimal shaping applied on the odd occasion on current accounts, but we have not yet rolled out our shaping policies live into the network yet. This will happen shortly before launch...

I often need to recommend an ISP to people whom I interact with, and CrystalWeb are now my #1 recommendation to clients/partners/others

Now if only I can get MY PARENTS on board aswell! *sigh* they still think Laurie Fikalov is offering a "kwality" service.
Old people... I tell you...

:D Let me know what your price for a capped (100 or 150gig) 4meg bundle is ;)

If its capped it should not be speed limited. Cause its in the ISPs best interest for you to burn through your cap so you buy more :D

Correct but I don't think that this is the intention that they have, I think its more about offering a quality service.

Been able to run my capped account on any speed line is part of that quality service :) Im sure they will be doing this. So its not a issue.

IzZzy is referring to a bundle, so line included.

Our capped accounts can run whatever speed you like. ADSL or VDSL. And we certainly do encourage quick burning - you can have as many concurrent connections as you like on them...:D

We cannot divulge our plans just yet. But what I can say is we're aligned with the market expectations and will develop our product offerings accordingly. Wireless broadband is certainly an aspect of the market where consumers constantly demand change...

Good to hear that.

Cat amongst the pigeons indeed.

Not necessarily. Many capped business models realy on "breakages". The concept of unused cap that falls away. Using all your cap could actually cause them to lose money.

eg they will sell you a 60gig account for the price of a 50gig account because they expect you to only use 50gigs.

I have been using an 2mb uncapped for almost two weeks, smooth as butter! Youtube actually works!
Support after hours is great.
It's a bit of a catch 22 if I should tell everybody about Crystalweb or keep it to myself and avoid to many people flocking there. :D
But since I always support the underdog and value new initiatives, personal support and transparent policies, I will for now keep telling people about it.

Ok, i'll bite.

Our uncapped products only shape P2P traffic. Nothing else. There are no usage limits, no complicated AUPs, no browsing or http download shaping, no real-time video shaping - nothing. Just P2P! If your 4Mb or 10Mb usage falls in the top 50%, we shape your P2P traffic until it falls below this point.

Can this be explained a little to me?
1) What protocols are P2P? I don't torrent much, I NNTP and FTP.
2) 50% seems high... i guess this is pre-empting the migration of heavy users from other ISPs? Will this be relooked from time-to-time?
3) Will shaping impact VPN & RDP?

Edit: if this is the list of protocols that are shaped, i'm in :)

I have also signed up for their 4MB uncapped. I will provide feedback from the 1 June with regards to downloads and Diablo3 :)

NNTP traffic falls into p2p.
We will constantly evaluate our shaping methods based on feedback and network performance.
Shaping will not impact RDP. VPN traffic is by default not shaped, unless used to bypass shaping. This is difficult to gauge. If there is excessive VPN usage on VPN protocols, we will shape it. If however this is legitimate traffic, we will happily open it up for you.

Good stuff. Some additional questions...
Is shaping dynamic based on network utilisation? Will it get relaxed during off-peak hours? Or if I'm the top 50% will my nntp downloads suck til i get displaced into the bottom 50% - which may or may not happen?

I guess - with the OW devil i know, i know with a fair amount of certainty that at 8am my connection dies, at 5pm it revives... irrespective of usage... What would my experience be with CW assuming i fall into this 50% high user bucket?

P.S. my VPN is only for work purposes, I believe shaping is a necessary evil to manage people like me :)

NNTP most assuredly is not P2P traffic though... I guess it's just treated as such for bandwidth classification?

Yes. The reason it's not stated outright is that the vast majority of ADSL users don't know what nntp traffic is, so it only serves to create more questions and queries than anything else. Try explaining nntp traffic to Aunty Margaret. :D

I will try to add it to our policy with some clarity though...
