Dell BIOS update bricked my laptop. HELP PLEASE?

Hi there,

Anyone able to help me out here? The Dell Support Assist on my laptop said there was a BIOS update and after doing it my laptop now says no bootable device found.

I have fiddled online a bit and tried this and that - changed BIOS settings to factory and default. Tried both UEFI and leagacy boot with and without secure boot enabled.

I also made a bootable usb with Aomei Partition checker and it picks up my hard drive and its partitions. On the check and fix it says it is picking up errors but does not auto repair it.

I today even made another bootable usb with the latest BIOS update from dell but in cmd it says that the file name I enter there is too long?

I am really fed up and dissapointed in Dell for deliberately bricking my laptop with their stupid update. I mean what the hell is this?

Some other additional info: I replaced my hard drive with an SSD to speed the laptop up. Cloned the hard drive contents using Aomei as well but that was almost a year ago and didn't have any issues up until Sunday.

Anyone with some knowledge with problems like these and things I can try?

Hi I've updated bios on a pc, not dell, over the weekend. Got a black screen after the update. Had to go in bios to fix the boot sequence so the ssd with windows boot and not the old hdd. Hope it helps

Thanks tried the boot sequence change already. Old hd removed and formatted for external use as well so not present in the laptop

It doesn't sound bricked if you can still access the menu. Not an expert but flashed a couple of chips with a Raspberry Pi.

Yes probably not. If I boot into the Aomei program it sees the hard drive with its partitions. I am no expert regarding this ao was hoping someone on the forum can give me some pointers as to diagnose what the problem is

Most probably a boot flag or something that is not set. Try booting from a Windows Setup USB/DVD and go into repair mode.

That would have been the next thing I tried. I will give that a try and see what happens. Thanks!

This is what you can do
dissemble the laptop and find the cmos battery and unplug it for 3 minutes,If the battery is married to the board try to find 2 solder points (and short them out with a tweezers)near the ramm slots it will say bios cls or cmos clear.. etc,This will fix your boot.i have done many resets like this but its not for the non tech guys,Google bios reset for dells
You will have to take the laptop apart to see these pionts on the board.

This always work for me to reset everything password related or bios passwords and faults.If for some reason it asked for password to anything bios you can enter any password till the pc gives you a code,use hirens tools and put that code in one of its apps ,it will then display a 6 digit code you can enter and then you all set to go

Thanks for this. Will the cmos be the problem though if I can still boot from usb flash? I will certainly still try it though

Can try unplugging the battery for 1 minute for good measure.

Had some issues with a 7400 series where this helped....cant recall the problem

Hahaha it is insured and was having these thoughts too. It gets replaced with a new model. I can even remove my expensive SSD as well and do a clone from the new drive. Most of my stuff is on the cloud anyhow so no big data loss

Just a quick check, when booting press ESC to get to boot prompts.

You should get a screen which says select boot device.

Can you boot from your SSD there?

Hi,I had that exact same problem on DELL XPS Win 10 recently, and after switching it off, reboot, repeated 3x times, it took misteriously, did some misterious repair, and was up and running again. I then did a troubleshoot on Windows 10 update from settings, it fixed a problem, and it still works no problem today.

you updated your bios from a legitimate source .The entire flashing process was 100 percent correct.SO next step reset everything.What i said works cause i repair those .Ok what is your laptop model and specs,I need the exact specs it has ,Download speccy and send me the specs that you see.I might be able to assist without you taking it apart.
