JubJub and Themba Tshabalala were called briefly to the dock at the Protea Magistrate's Court on Wednesday morning, causing a loud outcry outside as police battled to keep noise levels down from hundreds of people protesting outside.
JubJub, who had a foam brace around his neck, wore a pink golf shirt with green stripes and jeans while Tshabalala wore a black leather jacket and jeans.
Prosecutor Liezl van Jaarsveld told the magistrate the pair faced four murder charges, two attempted murder charges, one count of reckless and negligent driving and another of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Van Jaarsveld said the state requested a seven-day postponement for further investigation on grounds that further witness statements were needed, including those of two passengers. Technical investigations needed to be done on both cars and more time was needed to shed light on specifics of the charges and the granting of bail.
Defence counsel argued that they had been caught off guard by the state's request for the seven-day delay as well as the charges and asked for the court to stand down for "about 30 minutes" to allow them time to plan their argument for an immediate bail hearing.
Van Jaarsveld countered that it was the state's prerogative to decide on how the investigation goes ahead.
"We cannot oppose bail successfully without this information," she said.
The case is continuing.
