Differences between Macs and PCs

Mac Pro.

And in real world terms a Mac comes with a pretty powerful GPU, if you want to upgrade GPUs in PCs you usually have to bump the mobo, CPU and RAM up as well to get full benefit of the GPU. When upgrading the GPU from a 3870 to a 4870 or even the 5xxx ATI/AMD series the GPU will sit idling while the CPU and RAM controller struggle. Upgrading never works out as well as in the BS of the punters. :)

Mac Pro costs how much?

that is a load of crap. if you take 2 machines bought around the same time you would have nearly the same expense in upgrading the GPU

Also should apple reach the size of Microsoft they would have an EU commissioner up their finely machined buts b4 the sun rose on that day for killing competition by not allowing other software manufacturers to ship their shareware junk on the Retail CD.

That's not true. Apple does have a monopoly on Apple hardware but it's the same monopoly Coke has in Coke sales, and Ford has in Ford cars and Microsoft has in Microsoft products. There's a fundamental difference between Apple and Microsoft - MS makes Windows for PCs in general (Dell, Acer, Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, NEC, Asus, Kohjinsha, HP, Apple bootcamp) while Apple makes OSX only for its own machines. Apple will never be sued by the EC.

The only thing EC can do is prevent Apple taking legal action against clone makers who want to bundle retail copies of OSX with their Mac clones. That could dent Apple profitability but even that I'm not so sure of. However, a company may have a monopoly in its own line of products - by default every company which has ever made something with its own brand has a monopoly in that brand - BMW has a monopoly in BMW 3 series cars, Sony has a monopoly in PlayStations, Boeing has a monopoly in Jumbo jet sales.

There's no crap in saying that jumping a generation of GPU and not jumping a eneration of CPU/RAM speed will make your GPU idle. Intel releases faster CPUs every 6 or so months too - ideally a CPU and GPU and often socket and RAM upgrade is needed to make full utility of that newest GPU. You can't plonk down a 2.3 GHz Core 2 Duo with 533 DDR2 RAM and a ATI 5874 and expect the same peformance as the latest i7 3.2 GHz system with DDR3 RAM. Someone who is really passionate about gaming will not only buy the best GPU but also the best CPU, chipset and speed rated RAM. Those things change sometimes every 6 months. You always need to match your componens together or your CPU is underutilised or your GPU sits idling away and you wasted your money on that overpriced 'just released' GPU.

This guy explains it very well, for non-technical users. Great video.

More beautifully written because of that they are quicker and easier to use. Then he goes onto say sometimes the pc is actually faster :D

Contradiction much?

So apple's main selling point is quite simply you get no virus's or malware :D

Ok then let's all blow 20k on a mac with a 8600gs video card bwhahahahahaha

Wow that is a crap video. Now this is what you call owned :D

crap man i'm running a 4870x2 on a Q6600 and with a 5870 i wouldn't need to upgrade anything either.

and yeah, how much does a "mac pro" cost?

i've seen the prices of simple ram from apple - so im guessing quite a lot ?

really. good luck on that.

seems the "mac pro" comes with a blazing fast NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 with 512MB

total price though?

R36,000

For R3K one can buy a 487x with 1GB of RAM. Not that I'd want to.

People who buy these 'overpriced' machines actually work with them and make money of them. It's not like buying a 7 series BMW to show off to your neighbours, that machine is a workhorse and with the revenues the user can easily afford numerous PCs with latest graphics to play gamez.

i fail to see how this relates to my point about 2 machines bought at the same time and getting upgraded GPU systems.

I'm sorry you don't understand how the abuse of monopolies works.

Apple is not abusing its monopoly the same way Ford is not abusing theirs, neither is Toyota or Coca-Cola. If Apple were to bribe or threaten shops to sell Apple Macs instead of PCs - that would be investigated by the EC. If Apple released OSX for PCs and forced shops to sell it with new PCs - that would be investigated and if Apple then bundled their own browser with that forcibly sold OS - that would also be investigated. As is, a Mac is a complete 'appliance' product - but you can install Windows on it via bootcamp or even Linux.

Apple will never be sued for by the EC the way MS was. If you don't understand the differences (and it has nothing to do with market share) please ask someone to explain :).

for those that don't know, an nVidia GT 120 is actually a rebranded 9500gt

lol.... steve jobs is slapping you guys through the face!

I'm referring to killa's point.

Your point?

Well, I can plonk a 487x GPU into a Mac Pro for R3K.
However, Mac Pros and iMacs are mostly working machines, people buy them to get stuff done and you can play very decent games on these machines, in contrast very few PC users out there who are non gamers with lots of cash have high end GPUs - like the 4/5870.

So you're really comparing a Mac vs a niche market of high end gamers. Most people don't buy high end GPUs. Those Mac users with Mac Pros who need really hardcore graphics can buy NVidia Quadro cards which overpower the 4870 series for professional use.

The same users can easily afford a new machine - even PC based - or a console to play games - but if they're making money from their Macs they're probably buying real sportscars instead ;).

hey, that's not all it's got - it comes with a little 640GB dinky toy Hard Drive too! :D

LOL 36k for a monster with dum dum dum a 9500gt :D

Wow mac must be making some serious coin out of the idioticly rich dumbasses who pay that kinda money.

Peter you drop 36k on a mac, you think lekka lemme run crysis in bootcamp, you realize upon loading crysis on low settings and running at 9FPS that you have been screwed :D. People moan about 2k microsoft charge for windows but say nothing about mac charging 36k for a mac with a 9500gt lol

How much are 9500gt's like 500 bucks so 35500 is what you are paying for a mac :D, that is a bloody down payment on a car :D and you still cannot game, well you can but who likes playing games at 9 FPS on low :D.

If you go to Dell or HP and try to build a quad or oct core Xeon system like the Mac Pro you'll pay at least as much. Compare apples with apples.
