Do you bite your nails?

I don't bite my nails, feel like klapping my brother when he does it.

I never bit my nails...but I used to tear them off and scratch them. Many times to the point of them starting to bleed and get inflamed. My dad yelled, pleaded and gave me hidings to try and get me to stop....but nothing worked. At the age of 13 I made a effort to get rid of this nasty habbit and it took me about a month to get rid of the habbit. Whenever I started to scratch...I would slap myslef or pinch. Now I have nice wel kept nails.

Bitten or scratched nails is really gross and off putting. Looks really ugly.

it's not a habit that can't be ''un-learnt''
if things like that happened to my friends/family i would not be going to work for at least a few days.... so a really silly thing to say.
Bottom line is I dislike it badly. It is a sign of nervousness as per your quote which to me speaks of insecurities.
That means the person would have to work on kicking their bad habit & would probably have to work on their insecurities to ensure that they can get rid of the habit for good.
I can understand a teenager being full of insecureties but they out grow that leaving the habit to remain..

I'm pretty sure I don't have any insecurities... and I don't have any other bad habits. :D
I think you are over psychologising this! :p

I generally keep my nails short and tidy using clippers and an emory board which I keep next to my bed. There is no room for dirt to collect underneath. I only tend to bite them when I have washed my hands or had a bath. Then when my skin is pink and wrinkled and my nails soft, I tend to notice them and will bite them. The things is, I have pretty much bitten them all off, before I notice what I am actually doing, so it is not something I am nervous or worried about... and it does not bother me much after the fact either. If they look untidy then I'll clean them up a bit.

The fact that it bothers you so much tells me more about you, than it does about me. I really don't give a crap what others think. My original question revolved around, why people do it. Not what others think.

Someone who knows what they are talking about.

This happens a lot especially if you're concentrating on something else. Watching a movie, no matter how much I try not to bite my nails as soon as I'm into the movie before I know it they gone.

I find it impossible to just sit and do nothing with my hands, is it even possible? I must somehow find something to do to keep my hands busy.

Also if I see them getting long I have use my kit so it's not a case of "Oh my nails are too long let me bite them short"

Im a really bad nail biter. Have been ever since I was a kid. I guess its anxiousness, stress and anxiety for me. I also try hard not to bite my nails, but I fail miserably. In fact, I'm busy chewing them off as i type... :( it is a disgusting habbit, something I wish I never had.

Have you tried that nail stuff you put on and if you bite them it tastes really bad?

I did. For years.

Finally kicked the habit at age 30. Once you've managed not to chew them off for a month, and noticed how much better it looks, the temptation to do so again goes away.

I used to bite them quite badly for years, used to cause great pain but it was a serious addiction. When I realised how bad it was for me and how it made my fingers looked I promptly stopped.

I still nibble them ocassionally, but only if they're long and when I do, it's only a little bit off the top, not right down to the finger.

Never bit my nails, but use to bite the skin around them. Since I had bracers years ago it stopped the habit quickly.

No - but my nail broke halfway off the other day when I went bowling - and i didn't have anything with me to cut the rest off, so I had to bite it off. I didn't enjoy it. :(

i wait till my nails are about 1.5mm long, then chew off about 1mm so there's a fine white rim (.5mm) evenly distributed around the quick.
then i throw the ends in the bin.
i prefer the control of teeth to clippers and scissors.
i really can't stand emory boards, so i'd rather shave a bit with my teeth then rub against rough fabric to soften the edges.
i think my aversion of blades comes from my mother cutting my nails too deep as a kid and ending up with bleeding fingers. that's not on.
i find blades a bit clumsy as well and awkward on the opposite hand.
i haven't had a hangnail in years. works great for me.
while i'm at it, i generally do cuticles too. once a week is sufficient.

I also hate the boards and my nails always feel weird after cutting them with scissors too

anybody? I still do, sometimes when I can't get to the clippers fast enough. What is it that makes us do that? Some mineral deficiency? Not enough keratin in our diet?

No, it's f***ing disgusting.

Nothing more unattractive than stubby, sh***y little hobbit nails.

I sometimes do but I only realize when I have already started, it happens when I am nervous...
