Yes.

My sister isn't a fan of spanking, and her daughter is impossible to live with, rude and naughty, and of course she won't listen to you because "What ya gon' do? Talk to me?". She would look at you while doing the thing you just told her not to.

My dad would tell you twice and then you got it, never in public, but you knew once you got home, yeah. You behaved yourself because, if I do this then that happens, mmm, maybe I shouldn't do that then.

You should teach a child right from wrong the first time they do it, otherwise they won't understand why it was okay yesterday but today it's not.

Yes, as tough as it is, it sometimes is the only way. You cannot reason with a five year old, you cannot take things away endlessly and you cannot put them in naughty corners (especially if they've got an active imagination), but it's only the really really last resort.

Not till a certain age. At 2 they can't understand why they are being spanked. At 5....in the words of of Bernie mac: throat or gut?

I don't post much, but I came here for this.

This, is bullocks. And here's why.

My godchild is 1 year and 9 months old. She understands perfectly whats going on around her. Just after her 1st birthday, I was at my mate's (her dad) place, and he was working in the garage. Mia would repeatedly crawl to the gate, and play there. Her dad asked her 3 times, to get away from the gate, before picking her up and bringing her back into the garage. Every time, she'll just crawl back. So the 4th time, I said, leave it, I'll get her. I walked there, told her that she has been told to get away from the gate, gave her a smack on the bum (not hard, but firm enough so she'd notice it) and picked her up. She looked at me with a shocked expression, didn't do anything, and also, didn't even leave the garage after that.

Another example: About 2 months ago, they were at my place for a braai. She kept trying to unpack the cupboard with the detergents and soaps in. Her dad probably spoke to her 4 or 5 times, after which I said, watch this, and then in a firm voice told her to stop, or I'll smack her bum again. She didn't touch the cupboard after that. Which means she also remembers quite well at that age.

Another example: About 3 weeks ago, they were at my girlfriends place for a kuier. She kept unpacking the grocery cupboard. On her 3rd attempt, and after a lot of talking from her mom, I walked over, picker her up and said to her, does she want a smack again? And she left the cupboard.

And she doesn't resent me or hate me. When I pitch up at their place, she leaves her mom to come to me. She spits out her pacifier, because she knows that I'm not a big fan. If she didn't understand, why would this be her reaction to something I told her?

At 5 years old that kid is so used to getting away with **** that you won't be able to control them and smacking them would cause confusion, because it was fine all the time and now I suddenly get spanked.

I was spanked as a kid. And a lot. And I think I'm relatively fine. My kids will also be spanked.

I'm also not saying beat a kid to death, but if he doesn't listen after the first time, a spanking is in order, whether it be 1 or 3 of the best is up to the parent.

Yes and yes.
Always explain after the spanking why he or she was spanked, and tell them that I love them, but the kind of behaviour that led to the spanking is not acceptable and that they should try to do better or behave better next time.

Yet you seemed to think it acceptable then to spank another person's child.

Yes, as a last resort thou.

As per the above, only as a last resort. I don't like doing it, especially is we were a bit over disciplined as kids, but if talking doesn't help, a spanking does.

There is very few things worse then an undisciplined kid, nobody will like him/her and he/she will have it difficult in life going forward. You are not doing your kid any favors by bringing him/her up as a spoiled brat.

sounds like the kid fears you more than loves you.

If my mate thought it's not acceptable he was free to talk to me about it. And he didn't say anything about it. Pretty sure he wouldn't have made me the kids godfather if he thought I was doing unacceptable things. He's free to spank my kid he feels it needs to happen.

Yup. A lot of fear in the kid. She's petrified of me. :wtf: Did you read the post?

I didn't ask what your mate thought though presumably you didn't spank his kid prior to making you his godparent so I'm not sure that actually indicates acceptance on his part.

Anecdotally, some of the best young people I know were beaten as children. On the other hand they also tend to have the nicest, most loving parents. The human brain, and more specifically the frontal lobe which governs self control, is only fully developed by the age of 25 so conditioning a child towards discipline is the best thing a loving parent can do for their child.

Having said that, for full details of my qualifications on the subject see my sig.

oh I read it.....a bunch of once in a while observations from someone that is not the parent.

It's called respect. A thing most kids these days don't have because "spanking is abuse", and apparently they can't be taught right from wrong until they are at least 5.

Spanking is a good reminder to the child, but sparingly and also depends on the child. Some don't respond to it. a parent should be a mature adult and never spank in anger or frustration.

I agree that they learn early, they have to push boundaries but that's what parents are for. To provide a safe environment that the child can explore and learn.

I haven't had a reason to spank my 10 month old yet but she knows when she up to nonsense and checks for approval. A stern response is normally enough. If not then distraction works best.

Discipline starts early, very early. 2 years old is too late

Incidentally: the scientific studies are complete and they show that spanking is not only unnecessary but also harmful.

I see your scientific study and I raise you the snowflake generation.

I'm sure some discipline from a early age would have resulted in young adults with some sort of respect.
