I recently made the mistake of not reading the fine print and am now being throtled quite heavily.

I have a datapro uncapped 512k solution and decided to switch to Afrihost 4mb Uncapped, and wow the speed was fantastic, I was able to get all my MSDN software down quite rapidly and also streamingfrom my PS3 while not realising that when i hit 30GB i will be throttled to 1024 and then once i hit 60GB i will be throttled to 512 and at 90GB 128. I just hit 30GB and am currently being throttled, I have to say for the uncapped service this is useless don't WASTE your money, secondly I then decided to contact MWEB and explained the problems I was having and got a laugh from the salesman saying that not "True" uncapped, hmmm. He went on to say that they do not throttle speeds what so ever but do throttle things like torrents etc during business hours (very acceptable).

Now im stuck with a 1MB line soon to be 512, wonderful.

Anyhow I know poeple are going to start jumping up and down, why are you using so much!! well what is the point of "Uncapped 4MB" if you are going to be throttled at 30GB which you can reach in 3 days if you tried???? that means that 9 das of solid use will result in a 128KB throttle :D how cool.

anyhow I am definatly cancelling my afrihost account (and would warn heavy users against going this route) but now should I give MWEB (is it true about the not shaping at certain usage) a try or just stick with my good old non throttled 512KB uncapped?

Luckily some of us got this warning before signing up. Apparently its cool to offer a product and then punish people for actually using it. Not to speak of false advertising..

Can any of you guys confirm that MWEB does not throttle after certain usage?

Dude, these accounts aren't even a month old yet. People haven't had throttling issues with Mweb yet, only non-priority shaping during business hours. But no one's even run the thing for a full month yet. You'll just have to change to what seems to be a better deal and be willing to change again if throttling comes into effect.

Rodent-Boy, I understand that people havent had this for a month yet, that was not my question, my question was directed at somebody who has downloaded more than 30GB on there MWEB connection (which is very easy to do on a 4MB line), and the question was if they had esperienced any throttling so please as much as I appreciate your input it is not very valuable.

I said that people haven't experienced throttling yet, didn't I? I've exceeded 30GB on my Mweb and am still getting full speed after hours. My point is that, yes, RIGHT NOW we can tell you that there is no throttling after 30GB. Next month? Two months time? Who knows?

Edit: Full speed news after hours, still runs full speed priority protocols during the day.

thank you that actually helps, as this is a month to month contract I am not concerned about how things go as if they do start throttling in the near future then I will cancel, but the world could end tommorow so I don't try look too far in the future and spend more time looking at now, so right now Afrihost is throttling me terribly, and you say MWEB isnt so then MWEB it is. Thanks again.

Oddly, Afrihost kicked me to 2mbps when I hit 30GB earlier today, but now it's running at full speed again. Weird.

Yeah they told me my account is under review over the next 48 hours and if i don't download they will reset it to 4MB, bollocks, when I phoned afrihost originally and asked about the throttling I was told they do not throttle when you reach a certain usage only during Business hours and when I spoke to the same sales man again he couldnt remember that conversation :)

nope, there was no notification, I just realised my download speed dropped significantly and thought I would give them a call and while I was on hold read through the FAQ and noticed the throttling after 30GB's that they talk about.

I am rather dissapointed as seacom sells bandwidth in chunks of Mbps and is not affected by total GB's downloaded, so they now sell it to us as uncapped but "don't use more than 30GB's" warning in fine print. If anyone from Afrihost sees this post please update your sales pitch and put the throttling terms in the package details! At least MWEB where open about throttling during business hours....

Thanks guys, I was just going to subscribe to Afrihost 4 Mg uncapped. I rather look around again. Thanks for the heads up

Just a quick update, my download speeds are now maxing out at 50KBps (400kpbs) roughtly.

56GB - no throttling.
