Don't rush into buying uncapped from Afrihost

i hit 30GB i will be throttled to 1024 and then once i hit 60GB i will be throttled to 512 and at 90GB 128. I just hit 30GB and am currently being throttled,

Well Afrihost's T&C states you only get throttled at 60GB [not 30GB] , so you might want to look for another issue. They only "aggressively shape" at 30GB , which i assume means only certain protocols are getting a very low priority [i.e. Torrents], not your normal browsing. So if your HTTP activities are throttled too, then Afrihost is not applying their own policies correctly...

That said my speeds dropped dramatically late last night, and is up again now, so i'm convinced the network is taking strain/congestion/contention..

Can any of you guys confirm that MWEB does not throttle after certain usage?

This is MWEB's response in one of the threads on here:

MWEB said:
Our stance at launch, now & in the future has and will remain the same.

Our consumer (Connect) packages are subject to protocol priority based shaping with preference being given to the popular/relevant protocols/activities, and any excess capacity being made avalaible to non-priority ones (e.g. torrents, news, rapidshare etc.). At no stage will there be any throttling of a customer's service based on consumption.

MWB.

But don't miss the parts not in bold, the do shape things like rapidshare...

Thanks for the reply, yes they said they only start shapping at 30GB.

But in reality I am only at 38GB and they have throttled me to 1024, I don't think they can handle the load so I really wouldnt recommend them.....

I have always recommended them to my clients with regards to hosting and have always received great support, but for ADSL I'll rather move to MWEB after this experience.

OK.... I'm on fire here - I'm so angry... right now, as I type this, I'm lucky if I get 10KB! - latency is fine... but IS is ***.... @# #%# OH JIS I'M ANGRY.... I can't even open myBB.... I need to refresh 5 times... and when I dial another ISP's account... all is wonderful again...

The next person to say, "Go to mweb"... I'm there!

I can't even open this "client panel" getting severe timeouts...

BTW I'm on a 512 line...

I just cancelled my Afrihost account. I do about 2Gb per day some downloading some browing and watching online. I sent this

I am paying for 4 Mb line and you throttle me after 30Gb. This is not an uncapped account. You did not communicate this when I signed up in your T&C's which I read thoroughly. I was happy with the 200Gb throttling. I was a huge supporter of Afrihost and now I will tell everyone not to sign with you. I am off to the dark side Mweb as people are getting better service there with a real Tier 1 ISP. IF you sort out your sh$t then maybe I will come back but until then - so long

So everyone reading this. Don't bother with Afrihost. I specifically waited for their offer since I was a huge supporter. I used to BUY 30Gb per month. Now I reach 30Gb and I am throttled (http port downloading). They can go and jump for all I care.

Are you saying that all IS uncapped products are affected the same, no matter which ISP you use?

No, all ISP uncapped products are not the same, even if they do get their bandwidth from IS. What IS do is to sell bandwidth in bulk / wholesale. Companies like Afrihost then create there own packages on their own radius server. So the whole issue here is not because of IS or Telkom. Afrihost design their own packages and therefore they are responsible for their own problems.

IS provides either shaped or unshaped (or a combination of both). When an ISP opt to rather use their own radius server, instead of the IS radius server, they can "design" their own packages. I know for a fact that IS does not throttle their wholesale uncapped accounts. They do shape it during business hours though.

After hitting 30GB I also got throttled to 800kbps. Youtube and 5fm live streaming buffers non stop. afaik that shouldn't be counted as p2p type or "unattended pc" traffic.

Anyway, I canceled my account and requested my money back as per their "no other isp offers you this guarantee" promise.

How does one cancel with Afrihost? There T&C's URL leads you elsewhere. Sent 3 emails no response. Quick response when signing up but not now!!!

hi guys
afrihost their line speed 2 days ago.so speed is perfect.there is no reason to leave afrihost anymore.thx afrihost

Just downloaded from my Telkom account, with full speed around 260KB/sec , since I 'm coming near my Cap, I went to Afrihost to topup, guess what , speed test.net is faster
then Telkom, but the download only gives me 50KB/sec. So seems to be useless to Topup. AFRIHOST? maybe my last topup at Afrihost.

If you say you have no problems, then I have the following questions,

What package do you have and how much have you downloaded?

He obviously hasn't bothered to check what the thread is actually about, i.e. their uncapped account "limits". I'm also going to hit 30Gb sometime this month, I'll see how performance is, but I've already cancelled at the moment.
