In some ANC controlled metros in Gauteng those metros voters under or just above 50% ANC (provincially and nationally). Obviously those votes have no direct impart on the metros political leadership, but its a sign on what to expect in the 2016 municipal vote.

More than 40 people would not have been paying for etolls since last year so surely its unfair to selectively only go after 40.
If these are random what background, ethnicity, political affiliation are these 40? 50% at least ANC members and 80% African?

If these 40 are the highest owing I imagine the 40 will be businesses with a fleet of vehicles that racked up big bills. If businesses have to close down because etolls this is more bad press for ANC.

There is something like selective prosecution. It would be interesting to see the 40 profiles and see if there are any similarities. If so case would be dismissed in no-time.

I hope so.. because I'm very disappointed that they still got so many votes. People (masses) would still vote them.. when government is so incompetent

They cannot criminalise 5+ million working class people and I highly doubt that if everyone in JHB who hasn't paid etolls gets a criminal record it would really affect peoples jobs. Lets be honest here, you speaking about criminalizing an entire companies staff compliment. Do you think the company will really fire their entire staff because they haven't paid their etolls? Really? Highly doubt it.

But lets just go along with what you are saying, do you really think Goverment would let them criminalise 5 million working class people who make the economy run? This would have a larger impact than any Union strike combined by a factor of 10. It would literally crash the South African economy, so no it is not possible to do this and it just simply a scare tactic.

At the end of the day our government is stupid, and very stupid at that. These type of things, such as criminalizing 5 million people for not paying e-tolls will not bother them. For them it is about getting the money and that is all that matters. In fact, I can say for a fact that they will be happy if 5 million criminalized people are fired - more jobs for the poor - which is exactly the way these fools think.

But, that aside, they have started the process and soon the first few people will end up in court.

Here is my prediction of what will happen:

1. The first few people will be prosecuted and government will publicize these prosecutions best they can in the media.
2. At least 80% of all people who still owe toll fees will start paying up.
3. The remainder will be targeted and dealt with in court over a period of time.

I just feel very sorry for the first few people who will be made examples of. Not only will they be facing huge penalties, imprisonment, but I know for a fact that if they do not have cash available, they will lose properties and vehicles via the Asset Forfeiture process as well.
 
The moment they admit that they are "choosing" who to prosecute this whole thing becomes unconstitutional. We are all guaranteed equal protection before the law. This on top of various other unconstitutional practices already.

But they would be losing money.. these are all already tax paying people, if these people hypothetically lost their jobs, they would be losing way more tax money than an outstanding etolls bill. I agree that they stupid, but they not stupid when it comes to being greedy.
 
I don't know, hey. My etoll invoices are fast approaching R20k, and these scare tactics are scaring me for sure! I don't have R20k lying around, and the last thing I want is for them to seize my assets! :cry:

Not really.

The problem they face here is the shear amount of people involved. So, in order to start in a way the justice system will be able to handle the load, is simply by targeting a few individuals first. They will eventually get to the rest.

Many people on the forum though that they will arrest millions of people who will line up outside courts and bring down the court system. This is unfortunately not how this works.

There were many cases before where groups of people were charged, too big to be facilitated in one court, and they decided to target certain individuals first and later the rest. I was involved in two such cases and it was quite frustrating and took very long.
 
They will never get to the rest. It is a sheer impossibility. Therefore they can only choose some. Therefore unequal treatment before the law.

You are 100% correct. No one will ever teach them how to steal money, implement and enforce corrupt practices, etc., they are masters of that.

Unfortunately, like I said last year, looking at the corrupt nature of the e-Tolls system there is no way that it will be scraped. It is here to stay. Too many corrupt agreements already took place, too much money already slid under the table already, too much government pension money already invested in this project. There is no way on this earth e-Tolls can be scraped.

I am totally against the e-toll system, only because of the way it has been implemented. But, I did say last year that road users should rather avoid these roads and let the system collapse due to non-income. I was highly against people who said "continue using the roads, but don't pay", because this would have a huge impact on those who does this in future.

I always recommended that if you use these roads, keep the money aside if you do not want to pay. For, as the day of reckoning comes, pay up and walk away from it. I feel sorry for those owing tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands by now, and cannot afford to pay it. I know what the outcome for them will be.

At point 3) I run my own business so I can't lose my job :) but yes I guess everyone has to worry about that.

I know that big businesses, such as banks, expect their employees to pay toll fees. If convicted, it will be a traffic offence and the employee may, with a small possibility, still stay employed. But, future promotions will be out of the window. No corporation will be able to justify an appointment, new or promotion, if a person has a criminal record.

So that's it then? We must all stop fighting this and just give up? If they knock on our doors we must now pay after insisting and claiming that "I will still not pay"?

We have all stood together for this long and refused to pay? Now when they actually start their court cases we must all pay up?

I agree with you 100%, but this is just another scare tactic in my opinion.
