Yeah the airports with biometrics seem to be more harshly "segregated" between EU and non-EU.

e.g. At Heathrow there is a big difference between EU and non-EU queues. Meanwhile at the Rome airport I accidentally stood in the non-EU queue and didn't even notice till it was done. Both were equally short & manual.

Whats this biometric residence permit story though? Can you fly internationally with that?

That's the point, they are as African as Zuma, skin colour doesn't make someone "African" it can make them black, brown, pink, white (call it what you like) but a black person in SA doesn't have the monopoly on describing them selves as "African". A person with different skin tones and ethnicity can also be an African.

I'm not making this a black/white discussion, just pointing out the error in the way many in SA seem to think African = black.

Not sure what you mean. I have to take it with me since my passport doesn't have a visa in it. But it works the same as a multi-entry schengen visa...and allows me to work in Norway. The biometric part is awesome though. All the newer passports also have the biometric mark on it, wonder why the SA one doesn't.

Yeah you're right, that makes about as much sense as thinking you can only be european if you're white. I guess the entire Southern Europe e.g. portugal, spain, greece should be discounted for not being "real" europeans.

Same goes for being Asian. Who are "real" asians? Indian/chinese/philipino?

Interesting. Never encountered this before. Why didn't they put the Visa stamp into the passport? I know they do that for both SA and EU passports so I'm a little surprised Norway didn't.

They're busy with it (scheduled for 2007 - lol). Still won't really help for this though - those scanners at European airports on work for EU passports.

Central and Northern Portuguese people are fair skinned and about half are naturally blond due to the Celtic influence many years ago.
Southern Portuguese are darker skinned due to the proximity of north Africa and interracial marriages in their colonies.
Almost all Portuguese have brown eyes and they recognize me as a foreigner immediately because I have blue eyes.
 
If you gave me a passport and a one-way ticket out of here I'd be at OR Tambo within the hour.

A third of my matric grade are no longer here and more are set to leave, so yes, people are serious when they say they will leave/are leaving.
 
If you think of the numbers it is quite scary. I have done some reading on the web and a conservative count of people who have left South Africa since 1994 is around 400,000.

Assuming they are middle to upper class you can estimate that each one paid on average R150,000 a year in taxes (Paye, site, VAT, fuel levy.)

That means that every year the fiscus has lost R 60,000,000,000 a year due to emigration.

Consider how small the tax base is that provides welfare for the majority of the country and you realize what a huge effect it is having on the country.

Race doesn't matter, what matters is your education and level of work experience.

If you don't have ancestry or some similar way over you're on equal footing and I don't think race is a factor.

:erm: Other countries don't discriminate on race. Just shows how entrenched the mindset is though...
 
Indeed they don't they strike me as not even bothered about it.
All things seem equal
1. Work experience
2. Education

If you happen to have immediate family there already on a permanent residence basis, that is just usually extra points and helps.

There's few sites , like NZ own immigration site where they have questionnaires up which you can "test" how qualified you are to live+work in NZ .

If you look at all the questions they are all about:

1. Level of Education : Where you got it , How long ago you got it (and if you got it in NZ, it counts extra)
2. Work Experience : Where you worked, extra points if you worked in NZ before
3. Whether your education+work is part of their shortage/long term list of skills needed (in general this is same all over the world, doctors,nurses,engineers). However they have some big infrastructure expansion plans, so certain skills in construction/artisans/electricians etc also gives you extra points, primarily it looks like tradesmen/draughstman (an area of education that was totally destroyed by the ANC here when they closed alot of these schools down)
4. Whether you got family in NZ and/or any ancestry related link to NZ
5. Whether you already have a job offer in NZ

I think point #3 and #5 counts for most of the points. Obviously there are instant disqualifiers like criminal record or previously deported from NZ.
