eSIM options

Seems to add fuel to the idea that the 14 really might be eSim only.
Im not surprised just as they got rid of the headphone jack. Im 100% certain the newer models in the future will be eSim Only. As it will prevent people from touching any internal components.

Apologies, I have already asked in another thread but am struggling to find a definitive answer.

I've always used Vodacom prepaid in my iPhones which I understand does not quality for eSIM.

I bought an Apple Watch Series 7 with Cellular and would like to get an eSIM for it.

Must it be the same SIM/number as my iPhone (i.e. Vodacom prepaid & not possible) or can I get a Telkom eSIM for my Apple Watch separately?

At the moment, only Vodacom and MTN provide Apple Watch esim support and only on an open contract unfortunately, ie not on prepaid or Topup according to their websites. You would need to convert your prepaid sim to contract to use the cellular functionality on your Apple Watch.
I have however recently managed to activate my Apple Watch on a Vodacom Red Flexi 65 Topup package so perhaps things have changed.

Essentially the watch esim would be a clone of your phone’s sim and thus share the same number as your phone ie both your phone and watch would ring if someone called you. Your watch would use data from your phone’s package if you’re away from your phone, for example if you go for a walk/run or go to the shops etc and leave your phone at home.
(The watch esim is actually in practice allocated its own phone number but you wouldn’t need use it as it “clones” to your phone sim as mentioned above)

Ah. Thank you. So no Telkom Apple Watch eSIM for me.

Looks like I have no choice but to convert to a Vodacom contract of sorts.

Thanks for the dent wireless link, manage to sign up in 2 minutes.
I’m still testing will post feedback here, it seems to use Vodacom but at a bundle rate of ($2.91)R45/GB, it’s insanely cheaper than anything locally.

I’m not sure what I’m missing. Cheapest option I see is 10GB for $89.99 which is about R155/GB

The marketplace tab, which allows you to buy/sell data. The price is dependent on the seller, you’re buying fractional amounts at a rate of like $3/GB as an example.

What a mission. Vodacom doesn’t do LTE on by default, you have to wait till it upgrades the connection.
The iPhone has a GSM field app that you can use.

DENT uses Dynamic Multi IMSI (DMI), you can access it in the SIM app menu.
If your network search is on auto, you might have to manually select Vodacom and be on the right IMSI.
There seems to be 3 profiles, pick the odd profile which doesn’t match the starting numbers of the others.

There might be different providers for a data bundle but I can't confirm it yet, your eSim will either have
global.telcoequity or global.dentwireless as the APN. This breaks out in Amsterdam.
If you use internet as the APN and it works, you might break out in Tel Aviv.
If an APN does not work, you'll either have no internet or get a PDP auth error. Your sim will then cycle through the IMSI's but you skip can it by picking the right profile.
The international break out will bypass geo-restrictions, I only did a basic test with Netflix.

I picked up a prepaid eSim (provisioned only for data) from Telkom yesterday for use in my iPhone 12. I was dreading going to a store but the experience was pretty good and setup was quick & easy. It’s great having access to Telkom’s reasonably priced LTE bundles and it’s working awesome so far!

So i just went to Telkom now and they told me they don’t do prepaid eSim’s , only on contract.

So decided to check out Dent for interest sake after reading info here ... so am I correct in saying you need to 1st buy some data package (currently smallest is 1GB for $9.99), which will then give you the eSIM, thereafter you can buy from the Marketplace. Seems so, I've install and got onto the app, Marketplace is empty but assuming because I don't have the ability to use/buy from there as nothing for it to "link to" ie their eSim.

No. It’s just one eSim profile.
I haven’t bought one of the their packages, so far only two smaller bundles from the marketplace.

I think they are giving you the run around. Try another store perhaps.

I did a sim swap from a Telkom prepaid physical sim to an esim at Telkom Eastgate with no issues recently.

Prepaid is supported. See this article: https://techcentral.co.za/telkom-launches-esim-support-for-smartphones/170979/?amp=1

This was in Canal Walk so i just went to the other Telkom Store inside the mall and got the sim within 5 min. I fail to understand how these stores keep employing people who know nothing about their products
