eSIM options

Just some more Vodacom-related info.

Cheapest ‘open contract’ that allows eSIM is the 1GB/100 minutes at R199/m. Next one up is 2GB/200 minutes at R299/m.

I don’t use many minutes so will probably go with 1GB/100 minutes, and then top up using the My Vodacom app.

As mentioned earlier, I have recently managed to activate the Apple Watch subscription on my Red Flexi 65 Topup package. See screenshot. I got this for R49/Month but I see they are now selling it at R55/month.

I initially took this Topup contract out to work with my Apple Watch and was then told it needed an open contract when it wouldn’t activate with my Watch. I could have waited 3 months to migrate this to an open contract, but at the time I was keen to see how the Apple Watch cellular worked so I took out another open contact for this purpose. I now use the Topup contract for data for my iPad. Out of curiosity, about a month ago I tried to activate the Topup contact with my Watch and lo and behold it worked! Not sure if it’s because the contract is now about 18 months into its 24 months or if indeed Vodacom has now started to allow Topup contracts to be activated with the Apple Watch. Either way, it might be worth investigating if you are used to having Vodacom prepaid

Interesting! Thanks. I’ll speak to them about this when I go back with my decision on SIM only or SIM and phone. But I also witnessed the general theme that knowledgeable salespeople are a dime a dozen when it comes to eSIMs.

Thanks to info from @DA-LION-619 and follow up posts in this thread
I've been using DENT for about 3 or so weeks now, has been working well for what I need. I'm a very light mobile data user, I am using the 200MB free signup data they gave me still (yes ... I don't do much when out and about).
I had teething issues initially with the APN, but find these 2 now work, so I guess there could be a bit more latency in my mobile data traffic, but nothing I care much about or notice with what I do:
  • global.dentwireless: breakout in USA
  • internet: breakout in Israel
In the App I don't ever see things in Marketplace, I don't need it right now, I had to uninstall and reinstall the app before to get something to appear there, so when I get the point of needing that for more data, I suspect I will have to do that and then redo the setup/profile (I think I chose the odd one out like was pointed out here)

I got a Telkom prepaid esim on my iPhone 13Pro. It connects (and shows a data connection, LTE & 3G) and voice calls work, but the data just does not work. I cannot do a speedtest... Nothing. Support are clueless. Has anyone had this problem?

Been using a TM Esim on my iPhones since they were launched.
No issues

Similar thing has happened to me also telkom esim, I’ve had to change the APN to unrestricted before it would start working again.

It would say LTE but there would be no data throughput.

I've noticed that there's no data throughput when on 3G , only LTE data works

Update , I think it problem is tower related in my area. I switched to Telkom R , Data throughput is working on 3G

Spoke to my local MTN "salesperson" and he's advised that I can't get my existing number switched to an eSim and that I can only get eSim on a new number. Do you fine folks agree with him?

I've got a "work" phone on MTN and personal phone on Afrihost (which is also a MTN sim). Want to run dual sim in iPhone 13. Any recommendations on how to approach this?

Not sure if you guys have tried https://www.airalo.com

It seems a bit easier than Dent to setup, just remember to change the APN

I have tried the South African local sim and it works on Vodacom. Prices are fairly comparable with what you would pay for the equivalent data directly from Vodacom.
Did you ever use Airalo? I'm looking for connectivity in Uganda and $9 per gb (7 days) seems reasonable enough if it work.

Small necro

I'm travelling overseas at the end of Oct

Is Dent still the best to use?

@DA-LION-619 & others
Depends where you're going. Check their websites for their rates. So far I've used My Truphone in UK and Airalo in Uganda (with mixed results).

I’m currently traveling in Germany and Austria. DENT has been amazing worked flawlessly, expect it will in Istanbul on the way home too (did at airport on way over). Game changer having data on phone on holiday.
I actually have more data from my 2 daily things than when I started the holiday
Not spent a cent on DENT yet.
Brilliant in my mind !!!

I'm going to Oz (Aus)

What issues did you have with the 2 above?

My Truphone worked as advertised in the UK. It was just the Airalo eSim that gave me problems. Outside of Kampala it refused to work, despite their roaming partner (MTN) being widely available. Ended up having to buy a local sim.

A local sim came in handy because I could make local calls with it so it wasn't a train smash even if I did have to sacrifice $9.

Seems like a local sim might be cheaper in my case

Hope this deal is still available when I get there
