Ethernet vs WiFi Speed Lost

I love how it’s suddenly “most” and for years and a fact even with plenty of evidence to the contrary in both the new and historical catalog.
You can just Google what the largest ISPs in the country are, and what they supply ? And maybe phone and ask when they started with the hardware ? It’s not secret info ?

And then you can work out a percentage?

So take the number of users from Telkom, MWEB, WebAfrica & Afrihost and see what they issue - and take whoever BSB is using with the TP Link.

89% are using WiFi 4 and 5 . They don’t break down further - but I can guarantee you that the majority are using WiFi 5 … which incidentally means in most cases Gbit.

*There are outliers - but generally 10/100 & WiFi 4 ; as well as Gbit & WiFi 5 go together

*and I’m sure you’ll use them to drive home a point
 
Surely this is only a problem for internet speeds above WiFi speeds. How many people have internet connections above, say, 250mbps?

No you can’t just take their total numbers of users and assume they’ve been issued the new router just the same way you can’t assume even if every single one was issued one that they are actually using it.

People install routers and leaves them alone for YEARS. They don’t go rotate routers and ISP’s every other day like you seem to think.

And that’s why your logic and your stats are wrong.

It doesn’t matter what the ISP is offering now, it matters what they issued to the majority of customers over the last 10+ years and that’s not gigabit.

Same way the article is bullshit in conspiring local assumed gigabit speeds and then comparing it to rated internet speed tests. Those two things are not the same.

EXACTLY.

The entire premise assumes everyone has a gigabit link and gigabit local network speeds and then compares this to their WiFi which is simply a massive assumption and not based in any fact.

There was a time when a great many routers were “Gigabit” but not on their internal backplane and not on their actual ports.

Branded as Gigabit and everything until you got a surprise and then paid real attention.

Then some upgraded the WAN port to gigabit so that the wireless could at least be faster than 100MB…but the other Ethernet ports were still 10/100.

Magical stuff.

I see - do you not think there are more links registered now compared to even 5 years ago ? If we look at fibre coverage or pricing ?
So you don't feel that although they may have supplied 1,000 x old school routers then, whereas now they're supplying many times more ?

Why don't you ask a friend fo some auto provisioning stats to see what's on the network at any given time ? Even that old WR7010 supports TR69 - so everything would be available as a single snapshot ? Maybe get MyBB to write an article about this, as they also have the contacts ?

If the speed from many years ago has gone from 25 > 50 > 100+ ... they actually do give new routers .

But - hey - you're a specialist and you don't need me to tell you

  • This article wouldn't be an issue if there was no history between him & I on WiFi vs Ethernet
It's become a huge issue - but really shouldn't be :/

But to answer your question, real world WiFi speeds are fairly slow and you could really hit the WiFI limit at 100Mbps or less, depending on the room. Unless of course you have enterprise class wired APs dotted through the house or even a mesh system . Which in the other thread, was assumed to be the norm

I don’t have a Time Machine and most of these things have been delisted.

ASUS had an RT-1200* series which did it and TP-Link also had a few.

It was at the damn of 802.11AC where the router itself needed to be gigabit to support the higher wireless speed but they were too cheap to do it for the Ethernet switch.

I have a 40mbps fibre line and where I'm sitting on the bed today (I'm still confined to bed after the accident) is about the worst spot from my cheapy Huawei WiFi router. I've still got a 288mbps WiFi link, which is plenty faster than my internet connection. What am I missing?

1. What ISP is your friend on ?
2. What router does he have?
3. What are the incorrect badged routers?

That 10 years ago there was less coverage?
That 10 years ago there were less sign ups?
That ISPs issued Gbit routers now ?
That ISPs haev more Gbit on their books than 10/100?
