From the first round Germany and Argentina looks like the top contenders.
Below that. USA, Sweden, France, Norway and England all looked good.
Some top teams did not look very good in the first round. Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Uruguay.
The Arabic teams looked better than expected, and African teams looked meh.

Look at who the Arabic teams played against and who the African teams played against.
SA against Mexico
Algeria against Argentina
Senegal against France.
Morocco against Brazil
Egypt against Belgium
Cape Verde against Spain
All World Cup champions and one Euro champion.
The only African teams who got favorable draws are Ghana, Tunisia and Ivory coast.

It's the world cup. You can't be scared of the big teams and have this defeated attitude were you are lesser. You have to take on the big teams.

This is an aspect of world cups, all world cups, where an element of luck, re the draw, determines a team's progress.
We see it a lot in rugby and cricket world cups too.

Yes, you can take on the big teams and lose 7-1. You are just being dishonest, it is a fact that your chances of proceeding are greatly enhanced if you avoid the big teams.
So it has nothing to do with what you call a "defeated attitude" when you have big teams in your group, you beat the teams you have a better chance on and you hope for at least a draw against the big teams, if you beat a big team, it is an upset.
