But the Australian Greens - who are not in the government at either national or state level - have made clear they support controlled burning if it is carried out under expert guidance.

The Greens told the BBC that these accusations have been made for some years.

"We've never done anything to prevent or even restrict hazard reduction burning," they said.

He adds that a particular feature of the recent fires in Australia is that they have spread across the crown or top part of the forest - so removing growth at ground level does not make that much difference.

Also the fires have been hot and intense enough to burn through previously-cleared areas, with embers able to travel through the air and ignite other vegetation.

Ridiculous strawman. The fires don't start in the top part of trees. In order for it to get that big it needs a lot of feul on the ground.

What's your point. We have more data, more processing power, better modelling software today than we did 10 years ago. The fact they were wrong then regarding time scales does not mean the predictions today are wrong. Climate change is still a fact.
 
The fires are a typical perfect storm scenario where multiple factors have led to catastrophe, and I'd wager (with my simple understanding of these things) that if only one factor had been removed/dealt with the magnitude of the fires would have been several times smaller.

It comes down to a combination of a prolonged drought (making things drier than normal), a neutral El Nino (while it's not adding heat it's not removing it either), a positive Indian Ocean Dipole (adding heat), some unusual arctic winds that drove up winds speed in Australia and I'd wager a handful of government regulations / non actions (this is based purely on commentary on the matter from Australians).

Eucalyptus trees produce an oil from their leaves which actually forms a mist over the top of the trees on hot days. That mist is highly flammable and it's why blue gum trees go up like Roman candles when they catch fire.

Eucalyptus wood is awesome for making bonfires. We use to melt all manner of bottles and metal in our "petrol tree" bonfires down at Sodwana
