Ekurhuleni metro in Gauteng on Thursday morning began showing hints of what voters were thinking when they went to the ballot boxes on Wednesday for South Africa's fifth democratic election.

As of 6.52am, of 68,579 votes counted for the national ballot, the African National Congress had received 33,433 votes, the Democratic Alliance 26,626, and the Economic Freedom Fighters, who are taking part in their first election, had 4917 votes.

With 64,085 votes counted on the provincial ballot, the ANC had received 29,691 votes, the DA 26,829 and EFF 4534.

Both counted vote totals were still less than 10 percent of 1,547,459 people registered in Ekurhuleni.

In 2009, the ANC won 67.52 and 66.80 percent of the national and provincial vote respectively, followed the DA who received 20.45 and 21.26 percent.

Early election results from Rustenburg municipality showed the Economic Freedom Fighters, the new kids on the block, had won over 1400 votes in both national and provincial ballots counted up to 5.47am on Thursday morning.

Marikana in Rustenburg was one of the last places where Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema campaigned before the elections.

In the national ballot, the African National Congress had received 4239 votes, EFF 1407 and the Democratic Alliance 815.

On the provincial ballot, the ANC received 3902 votes, EFF 1439 and the DA 785.

A total of 276,349 people were registered to vote in the municipality prior to election day on Wednesday.

In the 2009 elections, the ANC won 73.87 percent of the national vote and 72.32 of the provincial vote in the municipality, followed by the DA with 10.82 and 10.84 percent respectively, and the Congress of the People with 7.91 percent and 7.84 percent.

At Marikana on August 16, 2012, 34 people, mostly striking miners, were shot dead and 78 people were wounded when police fired on a group gathered at a hill near the mine while allegedly trying to disarm and disperse them.
 
So far it seems like the Gang and the Economic Freedom Fools where a bit of wet tissues and not much else.

Edit - Seems I was looking at the wrong map on the EFF, where I saw they where 4th.

Its looking like the EFF have just taken COPE's place for this election... I expect them to do similar to COPE next election and get a tiny amount of votes.

They're [EFF] are doing a lot better than I thought they would. Very surprised.
 
The African National Congress passed the million vote mark after 4.30am on Thursday morning in the fifth democratic election in South Africa.

The early results at 4.40am showed the ANC had 1,100,891 votes, the Democratic Alliance had 623,234 votes, the Economic Freedom Fighters 73,723 votes and the United Democratic Movement 19,883 votes.

Representatives of the various political parties remained at the centre to keep an eye on the results as they continued to be updated.

The Freedom Front Plus had 26,271 votes, the Congress of the People 14,510, Inkatha Freedom Party 39,046, Agang SA 4437 and the National Freedom Party 26,608.

The Workers Socialist Party had 1007 votes, the African Christian Democratic Party 13,721, the African Independent Congress 11,244 and the African Peoples Convention had 3353 votes.

Al Jama-Ah had 4501 votes, Azanian Peoples Organisation 2030, Bushbuckridge Residents Association 1234, First Nation Liberation Alliance 491 and the Front National 662.

The Independent Civic Organisation of SA had 3397 votes, Keep It Straight and Simple 414, Kingdom Governance Movement 752, Minority Front 1135, and Pan Africanist Congress of Azania had 3293 votes.

The Pan Africanist Movement had 435, Patriotic Alliance 3732, Peoples Alliance 226, the Ubuntu Party 980, the United Christian Democratic Party 1661, and the United Congress had 313 votes.
