FNB duplicate transaction problem - what to do

IMHO this 'fault' started yesterday afternoon for some. I just had cash missing in my account. I thought it was due to previous transaction payments that aren't reflecting on my statement, but that went off now, but the amount didn't add up either, close, but not perfect.

Today I have a few bucks missing from my account. Nothing extreme, but it's gone. Definitely an issue.

Edit: Browsing and posting from a slow BB. Actually read the Article now. So it's from 1 July. Just sent my email to FNB.

Yup, and if you'd ever been affected by an issue like this (as I have with Standard Bank in the past), you'd know that if you do urgently need it, the bank will step in and communicate with whoever it is (hospital, in a doomsday example earlier in the thread) and make good.

Don't presume to assume I have never been in the situation.

I was agreeing with you and expanding on your comment generally, not trying to challenge your knowledge of the situation.

Just goes to show, though - it's happened before, and will happen again.

Ah my bad. Suffering from a cluster headache at the moment:P

My accounts arent affected. That i can i see anyways.

Interesting scenario: low earner (general worker) on the Easy account happened to receive their salary and because of the timing of this debacle, it was doubled in their account. They noticed and withdrew it all from an ATM. FNB is going to have a challenge getting that second amount of money back from that client!

Not that complicated, person A gets paid 7k per month, due to this glitch he now gets 14k instead of just 7k, he withdraws it. This means he owes FNB the money, FNB can try and arrange with him to get it back, which may be problematic, or they just deduct 7k from his account leaving him with a temporary overdraft of 7k, so next time his salary gets deposit it goes from negative 7k to nil, FNB got their money back. Hopefully for the guy he didn't go and spend all his money. Only problem would be if the guy salary was his last and he doesn't get more next month, of he realise his account is negative 7k and opens a new account at another bank, and gets next month salary deposited there, last case is easily resolve by only making the reversal the day before/on payday.

FNB sincerely apologises to our customers affected by duplicate transactions and temporary hold on some online services. We are working on a speedy resolution as a priority. Cards and ATMs not affected. Updates to follow. FNB - An Authorised FSP & Credit Provider (NCRCP20).

Personally I don't bank with FNB, but my business account has some duplicate credits.

Considering the seriousness of the situation, I am quite surprised these sms's have come through so late. For those not on social media or forums, there has been over 12hrs of not knowing what is going on with their accounts and I would imagine the FNB call centre has been under huge pressure all day - an early SMS would've reduced the load greatly.

Something tells me this won't be fixed before the new working week starts...

I have a double deposit of a nice amount. I'm not complaining at all :).

The fsckers have just sms'd me apologising for the duplicate transactions.

Yet when I checked my balance just now ,they have charged me some double transactions but also penalties for my transactions that failed because my account didn't have enough funds.

That settles that then. I reckon there will be a few general workers who are going to owe after this debacle is sorted and they have spent their "windfall".

Hardly the same, since he applied for a line of credit. Even if the wrong amount was granted the understanding is he still would have been expected to pay it back.

If you open a basic banking account with no overdraft there is no "acknowledgment of debt" / credit agreement. There is only an agreement to be liable for all bank charges if the funds in your account drop to zero before the charges can be recouped. I am pretty sure the bank will have to work hard to get their money back if an account holder has already withdrawn all funds today and same client ensures no further payments go into his account (salary\wages) in future.

I'm sure a few shysters will nab the money before FNB can get to it, and I bet that it happens all the time with incorrect deposits - FNB will be over the moon if the worst to happen out of all this was a few guys take a bit of money and run. They're probably insured against it anyway.
