French Elections 2017

Yes I do think that was a strategic error (to focus on the EU) which shows up in the age bands...those old folk are VERY concerned about their pensions.

Well I think the evidence is for change was Hollande's historical low approval ratings (definitely wanted a change from Hollande) + none of the two established parties got through to 2nd round.

When you're unhappy with your meal you shouldn't demand the waiter take a dump on your plate so you can eat that instead, simply because it's "change".

You wouldn't mind if the EFF/ANC want to nationalise banks btw, since that's what Le Pen wants to do, right?

Amazing how when this was leaked, hundreds of facebook and twitter accounts with no information start posting and retweeting the leaked info.

One account retweeting a tweet of one every minute for 24 hours straight.

Peculiar indeed ...

It's Russian troll/bot farms, aided duly by alt. right trolls and Wikileaks. They repeat the garbage verbatim, as if there's some nefarious stuff revealed simply because 9gb of stuff were stolen.

Hell, even The Intercept makes the important distinction.

There Are No “Macron Leaks” in France. Politically Motivated Hacking Is Not Whistleblowing.

This is funny, though.

Perhaps, but if this plays out as most people suspect, they won't be getting the president of their choice today... Also, with a two thirds majority, Macron won't have to make any reconciliatory overtures to the right either.

He definitely wont. His and Le Pens ideas are worlds apart.

Voted.

Much more queue than 2 weeks ago.

Marine Le Pen concedes defeat after easy Emmanuel Macron win

Emmanuel Macron has comfortably won the French presidential election, projections show.

The centrist candidate has won more than 60% of the vote, according to numerous estimates, comfortably beating far-right candidate Marine Le Pen, who has conceded defeat.

Addressing supporters in the east of Paris, she said she had already called Mr Macron to congratulate him, adding the French people had voted for "continuity".

The debate doesn't matter and the trend is positive for Le Pen, if you hold the chart upside down, like Trump does.

Keep dreaming...you do know Le Pen just doubled her father's vote share compared to 2002, right?

Macron will be a failure like Hollande. A smooth talker but nothing much more than that.

Good. We delayed the potential disaster for another 5 years.

I wonder what she's going to promise in 5 years since according to all of you EU and the Euro will collapse before that and France will be a third world colony of the German empire...

Putin will probably intervene directly at this stage, bypassing the alcoholic blonde.

Didn't realise Macron made these comments about Brexit - what an utter tosser but as the author notes, he is likely to be a weak President. Onwards to the French legislative elections... come on the Republicans! Macron must be denied his majority!

It won’t be easy, Mr Macron has described Brexit as ‘a crime’ an incentive to kill the EU, promised ‘tough consequences’ for the UK, and hopes to lure big companies from London to Paris. All is fair in love and diplomacy, so he will also have a direct line to the EUs steely chief Brexit negotiator – and fellow Frenchman – Michel Barnier.

Despite this, the UK’s Brexit team will not have their heads in their hands.

Firstly Macron is likely to be a weak President. His newly formed party ‘En Marche!’ (Onwards!) will have few MPs in Parliament after the June general election. This means ‘cohabitation’ – a sharing of power with the biggest party, probably the centre right Republicans. This restricts his choices for Prime Minister and other positions and thus makes the Cabinet, in practical terms, his equal in many decisions. So we must wait to see that team.

Both President and Prime Minister will have their hands full domestically dealing with a crisis ridden France. Internationally, saving the Euro takes precedence over the Brexit deal. We don’t know who the Chancellor of Germany will be after the autumn elections there, and as the dominant partner in the Franco/German relationship, the Chancellor will be the driving force in the end result of Brexit.

Finally, overlooked, due to flamboyant language such as Brexit being a ‘crime’, are his pragmatic statements such as looking forward to defending the ‘special relationship…..between Great Britain and France’. Sound familiar? – there’s a faint echo of Mrs May’s ‘deep and special relationship’.

Merkel will walk all over him. Very obvious. He's had 2 years in government...she's an experienced player in international politics.

Stupidity can't be fixed.
And there it is again. Liberals'/progressives' only trick.... label those who don't agree them as stupid. Kind of ironic that they haven't figured out this does not work and actually backfires more often than not.

Of course she got more votes - she's not quite as nutty as her father. Still a nutter, of course.

You didn't answer previously, btw - You'd be cool with the ANC/EFF wanting to nationalise banks, since Le Pen wants to, right?

Shouldn't he rather kill himself right now ?

But it's fine we got to it us french.

Somalia is our model and future...

Well, I don't support him. Though I can only agree with him.

May is strong. When she appears in public every 6 months !
