Frogfoot Cape Town

Hi guys, could anyone comment on this please?

This is ping directly from router to Mweb gateway, over Frogfoot. Ping seems reasonable, but the packet loss is what I'm concerned about. 48.7% loss, essentially on the first hop, that seems INSANE!!!

Thats quite a cool router that has pingplotter/MTR tool built in, which model?

Anyway the loss doesnt carry through to the next hop so it looks like the first hop is discarding ICMP packets for some reason, normally high load

@Frogfoot Fibre We're experiencing massive packet loss issues in Somerset West. High latency, authentication issues, packet loss. It's intermittent and it's a total disaster. On 100/100 we're getting less than a megabit!

Interesting, seems like I also have a line in the same area, similar issues. Over 120 drops this month alone...

Just saw this thread now and seeing people talking about the bad Frogfoot experience in Fish Hoek. A little further south here in Glencairn and it's the same story; it was exceptionally terrible around the weeks of Oct 11th/18th where intermittently there would be zero incoming traffic for a few seconds on PPPoE. If it went on long enough (say more than 50 seconds) then the PPPoE connection would drop and it would be a while before it would reconnect.

I'm not seeing the same PPPoE drops or absolute zero traffic now, so it's harder to just directly blame Frogfoot, but it still isn't right as I still have Zoom/Google Meet sessions freeze.

Using WebSquad as my ISP and did escalate it to them, but it's harder to point to the direct fault now without the same clear evidence of 0 packets received. Since it's only started recently I haven't gone down the route of graphing everything, but having lived through two years of terrible Telkom ADSL congestion in the area I want to make sure that this doesn't turn into a repeat of that.

Thanks @DYreX146
I've changed it to 2.5 seconds, but it seems worse. When I do a conventional, wired, speedtest, there is packetloss too. There was no jitter and packetloss until a week ago.
Weird, maybe do a trace to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 to see if there's any loss further along the network.

hi mate, no issues when I ping the router directly, even at 0.5 second intervals. It seems there is only loss when the traffic needs to go beyond the router.

Would probably still ask a neighbor who has a working router if can borrow for a second if DHCP or poe credentials (which FF should be), and see if loss still occurs. It is strange to have loss on that first hop, could be only crops up once needs to do extra work of sending upstream.

That first hop packet loss is near always router with few exceptions.

Edit: and no, not ruling out FF being an issue, can just be both. If some packets dropped by router if busy, it will cause high jitter and your window scaling will keep resetting and have pretty slow net. My case was both FF having an issue with area that went on for a good month, while simultaneously having a faulty LAN cable supplied from ONT to router, still had issues after FF fixed area, kept complaining and new techie came by with full own equipment and somehow got no packet loss, we plugged his cable in router, all good, old LAN cable and loss again.

Won't be in your case if router already dropping packets in regards to Lan cable, just have never had LAN cable being an issue before so never occurred to me.

My fiber went down @3am this morning. Service light and ethernet lights are both off. We use cool ideas with frog foot as our fiber line. So far nothing on the connection.

Day 5 of having no connection at all. Changing ISPs is hell. Line got dropped early on the 30th (instead of EoD 31st) and 5 days later we are still waiting on Frogfoot to reassign the line.

No issues this side. @Frogfoot Fibre always just works - never had an issue with them, ever.

Sarcasm aside, yes, down this side at multiple sites. But they have been quite responsive on the twitter front, have to give them that.

Have had frequent short disconnections on some days recently, only during the day though. It has otherwise been stable at night. Bergvliet area.

I am very unhappy with them. On their socials they make it sound like a partial issue in the Western Cape and Eastern Cape, but everyone I know on their network in these two provinces are down. They are clearly attempting to mitigate the scale this issue is impacting.

Some (very) lucky folk is online, with others being down. At least we are seeing some movement:

But yes, the moment I can get Openserve fibre at any of my endpoints/peeps that I assist, I'm moving those poitns to telkom. Rather the devil you know ...

Frogfoot says there are issues reported in the Western Cape and Eastern Cape and that their engineers are attending to the outages.

My question is how is it possible that these issues are not sorted out? I stay in Burgundy Estate, Cape Town and have almost daily outages. I am becoming fed-up with their service outages. I am working from home and this is absolutely shocking service.

@Frogfoot Fibre The same problem isnt supposed to constantly occur if engineers are attending to it.

This is what they sent me earlier today when I bitched at them:

I see their COO Llewelyn Hofmeyr is here:

Would be nice if we had direct contact details for him......
