All leave for technical customer facing staff was cancelled. In PE only 4 techies were allowed to go on leave due to prior payments, etc.

Do you perhaps have any updates on the Telkom FTTH rollout in Walmer? Keen to get onto the 100mbps package :P

Anyone perhaps know what telkom is charging per month for line rental only on their fibre lines? Just want to compare that with ISPAfrika (Dunno if I'm too keen on them.) Thinking about getting the line with telkom (10mbps) and data with afrihost. Been with AH for a while with mobile and their support is spot on!

Don't think you can get line only packages from Telkom, looks like it has to be bundled with data and ISPAfrika is getting around this by bundling the lines with 10gb only

That's a bummer. Well guess I have to make a decision and go for it. Will update on my experience as soon as I'm connected. Thanks all!!

You can't get connected until you've made a decision. Why are you concerned about ISPAfrika? The contract can be month-to-month and is much cheaper than what anyone else is charging.

True that! I dunno, was reading about them and someone on the WISP side of the myBB forums mentioned that they didn't show any registrations or certification with the associations in SA etc. on their website, not that it would impact the fibre side, but it sounded dodgy. I would like my ISP to conform to legislation if you catch my drift, don't want an ISP running a business out of the grannyflat outside. LOL. I am in contact with them though, Garth I think, they do have the best prices as you say. So will most probably sign up with them, and get my data from AH.

Telkom would never do wholesale business with them if they were not properly licensed.

I'm currently waiting for a Telkom FTTH home installation. I got the line from ISPAfrika on a month-to-month contract and the data from Afrihost, as each is the cheapest around. The R99pm Afrihost Plus addon is amazing value.

Any updates on your installation yet? I applied with ISPAfrika today; will also be getting AH data and have the option of AH Plus+. This is definitely the most value for money option at the moment.

Telkom would definitely have to keep in contact with me if they want to come and plan their installation etc. otherwise they won't get into the complex.

The only trouble I've had till now during my hunt for quotes is ISP's finding me on the system to do a feasibility check. Don't know how it's listed on the telkom system and they cannot use coordinates for some reason.

My experience thus far with ISP's for anyone interested:
I waited for WA to get back to me, even after the myBB rep took my details; I heard nothing so they lost out (even though they have really good deal with the freebies). Spoke to Vox yesterday and they are too expensive. They guy slipped something I think he wasn't supposed to. Asked for a quote for line only, and he gave me a price. Only after I asked about whether the router would still be included, he consulted his manager and then all of a sudden changed his tune. Still wondering where the initial price for line-only came from. I asked him and he completely changed the subject and talked over me. Telkom was useless and the guy on the phone didn't seem to wan't to speak to me. I queried iConnectSA as well, he couldn't find my complex on the map after giving my address and said i don't have ftth and that he cannot help me - I sent him a screenshot from telkom map showing my location with a marker and address, showing that I do have fibre - he sent me a screenshot back showing a location about 2km down the road from me with no fibre - I then proceeded to not go with an ISP who's staff can't think for themselves. Sent a message to cybersmart - no reply. Didn't query mweb - for obvious reasons.

I still haven't had anyone come over to do the home installation, or even call to schedule a time. Very unimpressed with the slow turnaround. It's been almost a month now.

Why are you phoning ISP's for quotes? You can see their products on their website. What feasibility test are they running? You should know whether or not you support a particular connection.

If you mean your FTTH status isn't on the system, then it probably means you aren't yet fibre ready. Half of my suburb hasn't finished the installation. My half is in the system though.

Sorry I have not replied to anyone yet, it has been a mad week.

@Bryn I wasn't looking for quotes for the packages, which as you say are on the various websites. I was phoning around to try and find prices to get only the fibre line portion from an ISP (ISPAfrika technically still bundles, even though it's 10gb). I was almost certain that I've read in one or two of the threads that people managed to do this (the one from WA if I'm not mistaken), anyway, I wasn't successful.

The issue I had was that my complex (Thriftwood - which was first to have fibre installed in PE) was so new, that Telkom's system didn't have it on their (most probably dropdown list pick & choose) system as a complex in walker drive. The issue was resolved by ISP Africa, I provided GPS coordinates. Telkom responded that on their system, Thriftwood is listed as a suburb (walker drive isn't mentioned anywhere) and I even have a streetname (1st time i encounter street names within a complex). The "feasibility" term they used was merely them double checking that I am indeed fibre ready before they assist me..

So atm I'm sorted, and my application is being processed by Telkom as per the comms I got from ISP Afrika today. SO thanks anyway @MickeyD ,,

I don't have an order number though so won't be able to follow up with Telkom or attempt making some fire under them. Hopefully the installers have my details to arrange access to my place when doing site survey etc.. We'll see in the coming weeks...

Thanks for all the advice from everyone though.. Will surely return the favor to anyone else :) Always a learning curve when treading uncharted territory for the first time. Keep us posted with your progress @Bryn

Finally... I got a reply back from ISP Afrika that was more than just, "we have manually submitted your application".

Your application has been submitted and is current WIP (working in progress).

As per Telkom: The application was loaded under worm reference: 1xxxxxx9.

Not quite sure what a worm reference is though. :D

Yeah, thanks. MD. I was kindly contacted and guided what to say to the ISP. I'll feedback tomorrow with the worm number. :D

PM me that worm number and your address, etc. (I know I did have it but I tend to delete messages too quickly!). I will also forward it to "somebody" - not the same person.

ISPAFRIKA told me that they cannot give me an order number as my application had to be submitted manually and that they work through openserve so I wouldn't be able to get feedback from the normal telkom channels.. I know it has only been a week but i feel left in the dark... Will someone phone me to arrange site survey , are they gonna rock up randomly when I'm not home... I'm 35km from home during the day, I can't just quickly pop out to come home.
