FYI

I emailed SARS and asked about importing lenses and digital cameras. The customs codes these fall under are 8525.80 for Digital Cameras and 9002.11 for Photographic Optics and Lenses.

These should ONLY be subject to 14% VAT. There are no customs duty according to the schedule. So if you get charged anything else... they are ripping you off.

The calculation i have from SARS is as that VAT is calculated on the base price + 10%. ie. VAT = (Value + 10% of value) x 14%

So my final calc for the cost of importing something would be ((Value * 1.10) * 0.14 + value) = 1.154 * value

Hope this helps anyone thinking of importing

Interesting about the VAT but I was informed it was only the glass that was duty free. I dont think I'm going to take the chance and get whacked when I get my new body - instead I'll wait until August and pick it up myself.

Also - something to keep in mind with Canon - their lenses have an international warranty - their bodies dont.
 
Yeah I guess you wouldn't want to fight with a customs official and then have to wait long for you stuff to clear and all that. In a month I'll have an upgrade when my bro comes down from Saudi... he just bought the camera an hour ago :)
 
A friend of mine imported some UV filters and other fancy add-ons for S5 IS when they just came out here. He had endless trouble with the guys at Cape Mail because the seller included an invoice.

When ever I import anything I request that no invoice or value indication is given. Then you'll get a notification from your local mail depot to send them the invoice before they will release it to your post office. This is where creativity comes into play :p ...
 
Ok, a question ..... I put my camera onto 'Manual' and found the ISO settings and what not but there is this other setting that I need some clarity on. In the corner of the screen, I can change F to either 2.8 or 8.4 and just below it there is a default setting of 1/250 which can go down to 8s and up to 1/2000. What are these settings?

There is also a 'Metering/ option (Multi or Spot) and White Balance option (Auto WB, Daylight, Cloudy, Fluorescent_H, Fluorescent_L, Tungsten and Custom), what are these best used in/for?

F/2.8 refers to the aperture (iow - how much light is let in) and 1/250 is the shutter speed.
 
Thanks bwana ..... so what are the different aperture and shutter speeds best used for, if you can give an example?
 
Aperture is how big you make your eyes... shutter speed is how often you blink ;).
Aperture controls depth of field.
Shutter controls motion.

Look for information on the exposure triangle to understand how Aperture, ISO and shutter speed relate.

This was my first foray into understanding photography some time ago. Didn't understand a thing till I seriously got addicted 2 years ago. There are a lot of resources on the net to learn about the basics of photography. Check the sticky thread. The canon resource is pretty good.
 
I learned everything I did not grasp about photography on Wikipedia.
Like they say, dangerous knowledge yields explosive results :p
 
Made mah own contraption today .... I called it 'MyPod' :D And no funny comments, I suck with making things, so while it looks hilarious, it works :p It even has forward and backward tilt :cool:
