General Photography

If I may - What would you guys recommend using for photo editing and such? I was quite happy just using MSPaint but I'm losing quality big time and the options are rather non-existant.

Oh ja, and a free option is obviously preferred ...... not a chance I'm gonna shell out a good few hundred/thousand for software.

GIMP = Free

But why edit a picture ? The idea is to capture them perfectly. Editing is like cheating :p

..... oh no, I don't wanna edit them like you and bwana do :p It's just that the pictures lose so much clarity when I resize them for uploading. That raindrop shot specifically looks so cool in all it's Superfine 8mp glory compared to what I uploaded.

The forum gallery also degrades the image quality - thats one of the reasons I prefer flickr.
 
Really? I would never have guessed. Guess I need to get set up with Flickr then huh.

photobucket does pretty good resizing...

GIMP.
I used to use Google Picasa, but it wasnt all that powerful. Then I switched over to GIMP, it is miles better, but you will need to get yourself a guide of the internet on how to use it, otherwise you will be lost in what it can do. All me recent pics use 3 programs:

1. Gimp 2.6 for general stuff like resizing and other touch ups.
2. Microsoft ICE - For panorama stictching
3. Photomatix Pro 3.1 - For HDRs and exposure blending. I just discovered the exposure blending part recently, I actually prefer it over the HDR feature.
 
Once more, thanks to all of you for steering a photo-noob in the right direction :)

Just had a nice little present delivered in the mail today..

Got a copy of Leading Architecture and the panorama of the new stadium and old stadium in Durban is mine... :)... (granted its not a PERFECT shot... has a few issues, but still.. I are now published :p )

*does little happy dance*
 
So how many of the Execs did you have to sleep with? :p

Well done on the pic being 'published' bru :D
 
Eish.. its a Primedia publication... I ain't sleeping wif any of those Execs :p

Pretty much... even though I didn't get paid for it or anything... Just beyond awesome to actually see one of my own photos in a print magazine....
