Perfect! Having just got the same router and waiting for telkom to activate my dsl line you have made things simple for me! Thanks a stack dude! :)

Elaborative, comprehensive & extensive guide. Thank you.
Quick stupid question: Under what circumstances will you not qualify for a self-install? Or if your line supports ADSL exchange, then you automatically qualify for a self-install?

I did a line install in December of last year and went with the Closer 1 package. No installation fee for the line was asked, but do confirm this before hand with the Telkom Sales rep.

Yes I think if your line supports ADSL you would qualify by default. Maybe someone can confirm this though?

excellent guide. thanks a mill ! i will def be reffering to your guide when installing my line ! just called telkom now and they can only confirm if a line can be connected after next week (due to the holiday etc)

were did you buy your router from ? price etc thanks

d@mn ! i just googled it and see prices are from R700 upwards

thanks i'll give them a call

R450 for a Wireless N ADSL2+ router is a real bargain, especially if its a decent brand like Linksys!

I think you should check for DSL availability in your area before applying for the telephone line :)
Other than that, the guide is awesome.

Even if your exchange is not ADSL compatible, you should still apply for ADSL.

I live in an area without ADSL and I do not have a line. The Telkom consultant told me that Telkom will only install ADSL if there is a demand for it in my area. I am currently convincing all my neighbours to apply for ADLS and if Telkom decide that this is sufficient demand, Telkom will upgrade the exchange. When they do start installing at my neighbours, they will simply tell Telkom that they no longer need it. Telkom will not be able remove the ADSL from the exchange and I might get my ADSL.

I know its a bit sneaky on our part, but its the only way that Telkom can estimate the demand can upgrade the exchange. It might take a while but atleast its a start.

Bought mine from Centurion Technologies about 3 months ago for +/- R450 if I remember correctly. The number is 0126637836.

do you web link for them, or address maybe - wanna go past later maybe

If you don't have a landline number yet, the easiest would be to get one of your neighbours landline numbers and then go on the telkom website and use that number to check if it's DSL capable. That should give you an indication.

cool, ill go during lunch
did they have it in stock in when u went or did they have to order?

They had it in stock. I actually ordered a different one but when I got there to pick it up this one looked like a better deal.

PS. I'm not 100% sure what the price was but I'm pretty sure it was below R500.
