I've disabled APNdroid and had no problems since. Seems to working nicely. Downloading Qik as I type :D
 
Just tried the non-root version of the hacked Google Maps Navigation that works internationally. Worked pretty well! The only thing was the voice directions come in pretty much at the turn instead of some time before it. That's not a big deal since the onscreen directions follow you and rotate the map as you go - very accurate.

Finally got my N1 last night, after picking up the friends who were couriering it at the airport. Now to re-read this thread from the start...

i seem to get unnanmed road in the green bar at the top, even though on the map the street names are there. i think as a result it means that there is no voice direction. how did you get the voice to work on yours?
 
The last vent dock I had broke my vent so I stay away from them. That and they cover up the entire vent...in Durban's heat I need that A/C blowing nicely....

I also installed brut's maps v6 over the weekend, what a legend. On the site he does mention the known issues at this point being:

* No street name at the top
* No arrow indicating next turn direction
* Voice guidance is delayed, if at all present
* Directions to contact do not work in "alt" (brut4-alt and brut6) versions

My experience with it was that the synthesized voice gave me the initial direction ("Drive north on....") but I didn't hear anything further after that. Hopefully this along with the other issues will be sorted out with future releases, nice one Duncan for that link. Installed it on the exact day my NDrive trial expired so you saved me 70 pounds :cool:

Its still totally usable, my only minor gripe is that google maps aren't onboard, so there's that minor data transfer when using it through 3G (or major depending on how long you use it for, but I don't need a GPS to tell me how to get to a particular suburb)

I hear you, I initially had the dock on my left side (main vent) but moved it to my right because of that point exactly. But I should also mention that the dock I ordered came with other options for mounting, including an adhesive pad which can be stuck on any flat surface. pretty thoughtful of them.

How did that Zagg shield work out for you?

8) NetCounter (keeps track of your wifi and 3g usage)

12) Screebl (keeps your screen on when the orientation is in upright mode)
13) Speed Test
14) Wi-Fi lock
15) Zedge

I got it to fit really nicely - no loose edges anywhere. However, I'll probably still be ripping it off, for 2 reasons: 1) there's a really weird texture on the screen. Not the orange-peel effect, but more a kind of shimmer made up of little vertical "scratches", and 2) because the full-body skin (even though it's very thin) seems to get in the way of charging via the dock.

2 can be fixed by trimming the bottom part of the Zagg shield, so I'll do that now. As for 1, I'll give it another few days to see whether it goes away. Thanks for the app ideas - will check them out. My standout apps so far are:

documents to go
quick uninstall
 
I've gotta say, I'm finding this phone revolutionary.

Google Goggles is amazing.
The weather widget is fantastic - especially seeing the continuous graph of temp and rain % for the day.
The dock is great - as a bedside clock, and for streaming music from the phone to the dock connected to the hi-fi (go into wireless settings/bluetooth and pair the phone to the dock)
The screen is brilliant for watching movies - especially if the room is darkish so that the blacks are pitch black.
And the speed, oh the speed.

Are you guys using live wallpapers? I'm using Starfield (it's in the market) with no background (black pixels use no power - and I love how black the black is - makes icons pop), speed slowed to 1, and 200 stars.

Edit: and I'm using the speach to text more and more, especially for SMS. Today I had my arms full with bags and toddler at the hospital to see my wife. I had to sms her that we were there - one click to open ChompSMS, one click to open her thread, swipe across the keyboard to get the mic, and "We're here honey". One click to send. Works a charm and no fiddling.

I actually stay away from live wallpapers cause it apparently chows battery even if you set the speed really low. I created a solid black background to use at one point but I actually dig the preloaded backgrounds that come with the phone (the blurry blue one is my personal choice at the moment). I love how customizable the pages are and digging my layout at the moment (will try post some shots at some point)
 
Ive had the phone for about 3 weeks now, and am now officially an android fanboy.

Came from the iphone 3g (which i swore by) and even jailbroken is nothing against the Nexus one.


Loving it.
 
do you find that when you forward from an imap email account, any attachments are not forwarded?

edit - it seems to be a know issue. K9 Mail is now the mail browser I use for non-gmail accounts.

With the recent launch of the AT&T version of the N1, which version should we be getting in SA?

AT&T 3G Frequencies Supported: 850/1900/2100 MHz
T-Mobile 3G Frequencies Supported: 900/AWS/2100 MHz

Vodacom (UMTS channels 1 - 3): 1920 - 1935 MHz // 2110 - 2125 MHz
MTN (UMTS channels 7 - 8): 1950 - 1960 MHz // 2140 - 2150 MHz

Depending on what 'AWS' is (I have no idea!) - it looks like the AT&T version is a better fit for SA, no?

true but the marketing was basically non-existent for the N1 and you could only order it via Google's website. Google's approach was all about giving people the choice (particularly Americans) to purchase a device out of contract so its a shame that people didnt see the value in that (yet).

Look at it this way: RIM shipped over 10 million BlackBerry smartphones in the last quarter of 2009 alone. What would you rather be jamming on

My friends in the US are waiting for it to come to Verizon or AT&T. Apparently, T-Mobile has the crappiest reception and coverage, and although it's unlocked it won't work on Verizon which is not GSM, and only on edge for AT&T because of the bands they use, so in the US it's worth waiting
