no, it was my ignorance re shipping. The phone is in the UK. I thought it was in SA because I got the invoice for customs clearance, but they pre-clear it. They say I'll get it by the 8th

Ya the preclearance thing sucks a bit. That's still a hefty turnaround time though. UK to here should be like 2/3 days max. Anyways you got more time to get your gadget lust drive up. :) .

Did you ask for it to be sent to the UK? Or is that the courier that sends it via the UK?
it's FedEx. It went to Paris first!

how does one setup the mtn 3g access on the phone?

EDIT:
Code:
Name: MTN
APN: internet
Proxy: 196.11.240.251

were the settings for the new APN I had to create (Settings --> Wireless & Network --> Mobile Networks --> Access Point Names)

+1 Thanks for that.

It arrived today in perfect working order. I'll need to get a micro usb charger because the one I had lying around doesn't fit and the N1 obviously comes with a US plug/charger (I think my old one was mini-usb - not sure, but it's a bit bigger). I can charge using supplied cable to plug into my laptop. It remembered all my settings from my Magic. Wonderful!

The phone is unbelievably cool. Super fast, thin, feels good. The first thing I did was run the multi-touch update. Went flawlessly. The screen is fantastic. Voice to text handles my SA accent without a hitch. It worked 100% even with my toddler screaming in the background.

Next, I'm going to install the hacked Google Navigate and see how that works in SA.

Going to try the Dock now...

Lucky fella, mines still chargin. Universal adapter from PicknPay for R+/- 50 does the job. I was also amazed at how thin it is. That multitouch update, is it not automatic OTA? As for the hacked Google Navigate - Do share how/where please....

Looking forward to your reports on the dock...

is that just a plug adapter or a usb adapter?

plug adapter.

Can anyone help... I need to setup an IMAP mail account. It wont recognise mail.mtn.co.za as outgoing. What port should I use for outgoing?

do you not have it setup on your computer as imap? if so check the settings that are used by your mail client.

If you don't have IMAP, you could register for a GMail account and get the mail routed through there. Check what the settings are from MTN, usually the port is 25 for most, and also check if the server requires use of login credentials for POP/IMAP. You could also use the GMail SMTP, but you would require a GMail account for it as well.

It's groupwise unfortunately so the mail client is useless for external settings. Gonna get the IT guys on board for this. As for the outgoing mail server port, I'll call MTN (shudders) and hopefully I get some1 with a decent IQ who understands.

Thanks for the help.

Apart from that - I managed to cane the battery in one night, lol. Apps galore. I've never used android before so its a bit of a learning curve at the moment but everything feels so intuitive. My winmo and symbian devices are already relegated. When I showed my little one barcode scanner with his books...he was gobsmacked. he wants it for himself now....no chance of that happening! Awesome device really.

Another thing I picked up. I was using a different micro usb adapter (the 1 from plantronics for my headset). It was trickle charging the phone, was taking 4Eva! Had to switch back to the original and charging is pretty snappy. I'm quite impressed.

Hmm, I am using the supplied usb/micro usb adapter till I get the plug adaptor and that seems to trickle charge. So definitely, the US plug adaptor seems to be the solution

yeah the USB charging takes forever. probably means there is a need to up the voltage on the USB port like is needed with a blackberry.

Yup, its definitely the way to go. As milo said, voltage issue most likely (or is it amperage?..watever).

Managed to get my IMAP mail working...sweetness!! my mail has never looked so good on any device. The settings for outgoing were mail.mtn.co.za and port 25. Working like a champ. I must say the news24 app is brilliant as well. Really enjoying that. Need to focus on actually doing some work now... and oh yes I need to get me a glasses cleaner cloth...my fingerprints are all over this thing.
