how long did the battery last?

it actually last me like a day if i fiddle with it now and then(playing games, browsing web, etc), if i dont, i will probably go thru in the second day.

is it just me or is the ringtone/sms volume kinda low...? Battery seems to last about a day with moderately heavy use. Screen takes up the most power, think i'm gonna switch to a black wallpaper and see if it helps at all.

ya, the ringtone and sms is a bit low(especially when it is in the pouch). I tried, but it really depends on the usage, it last a day on mine...

How is the current market at the moment? Anybody rooted it yet to get the full market? What about the availability of the good APK's as opposed to rooting?

I've rooted my phone recently to the CyanogenMod 5.0.4.1, it added some cool stuff, things like the RGB Trackball color and also fixed a few issues.

With the apps, you could download it on sites, and then search for an app on the android market called APK installer, load the apk on your SD card and run the app, it will scan all apk on your SD card and then you can install from there.

I think it very handy, was thinking about rooting or not, but at the end, i had a thought: if i dont root it, i cant get any paid apps, so this phone is very plain, and about the warrenty, it hell of a big job to send the phone back, so if the warrenty get void, doesnt really matter tho...

Plus if you dont like the rooting, they have the original firmware on forums where you can install them back...
So ya, it pretty cool...

Cool, do keep us posted on the good paid apps for your nexus one.

I have another theory, which may work. If the carrier sim is what determines the appstore availability, and I use an old UK sim in it here, will I then be able to (over wifi obviously) get access to the paid market? Definitely worth a try I think.

Alternatively when I go abroad I'll get a local sim and just load up on apps then.

All in all I think its just gonna be a matter of time before I root as well. the apps2sd is another big issue that requires rooting. I'd like access to the full potential GB's for apps rather than the limited internal allocation.

lol i would wait for it to be at least beta. but if you have really big cahonees , go for it :p .

How is the stability of cyanogen - any bugs?

LOL havent thought of the Modaco Rom yet, will wait till it more stable before i do anything with it.
With the current Cyanogen, it is a stable rom, it not Beta version. I havent had any issues with it.

The current paid apps/games i have on my N1 is:

Twidroid
Armored Strike
Crystallight
Grave Defence
Labyrinth
Millitary Madness
Mystique Chapter 2
Robo Defence

Still searching on the web to check for awesome apps. Any recommended paid apps?

crap, Fedex just invoiced me for R1381.84 for FedEx Vat and Duty (this is on top of the delivery fee)! Has anyone had anything near that much? I used the FedEx Tax and Duty estimator which said to expect $111.90 (R860). Is there a way to appeal this charge?

Damn! That sucks!!

Not sure about appeals for Fedex, but you can appeal a customs charge. Good luck!

Have you tried the google maps navigation?

Most of the guys on the forum seem to prefer ndrive .

The thing with google maps navigation is that turn by turn voice nav is only available in the US? Never heard of ndrive but I'll check it out, thanks

sorry to hear that man, I paid around R900 if i remember correctly but delivery from MyUS came through via DHL. I'd definitely appeal that charge mate

Request a breakdown of the entire VAT and Duty fees and paste it on here. they are obliged to give you this. Once you do that I can have a look throught he relevant legislation and tell you whether its a SARS appeal or Fedex appeal. Hope you come right because that is just not on.

Hi Duncan

I've recalculated your duty plus vat as follows.

I've used $600 based on SARS exchange rates on their website for 28/02/2010 which give you ZAR 4745 (rounded)

Your Duty sched1 2b is then 7% = 332.15
Your Vat is then per s13(2)(a) = 781.88
Total VAT + Duty = 1114.03

Your total as above = 1167.32

The differnce is marginal really. The processing fee and disbursement is fedex service I'm assuming.

Sorry Bud, it seems like its ok. I know other guys have paid R1100 but without the fedex charges because I assume they cleared it themselves.

I hope that helps a little.

Thanks. Guess I'll use a re-shipper in future. Anyway, the way I can look at it is that I get a Nexus One for R1380. Not bad.

Give it a week with your new toy and you wouldnt even give it a second thought. Please give us a review of the dock when you get a chance.

will do. You know, it took 2 days to get to SA. Then they say it should arrive next Monday - ie: a week in SA to get to me. Sigh.

I ordered a dock too. It's pretty crappy to be honest.

(1) The phone doesn't sit particularly well (it can even fall out if you press downwards, e.g. on the power button).
(2) It doesn't mount the phone when docked, so you have to take it out if you want to use it as a USB stick.
(3) The software doesn't behave nicely.. there are some oddities with the clock-mode (e.g. I get an email alert, open it and 5s later the mail closes and the phone goes back to clock-mode. This could be related to the first point - so it might be disconnecting when I swipe downwards to read the mail notification and then when it reconnects it goes back to clock mode. I'm not sure though.)

The phone is really amazing though and I'm loving it more each day. Also: the phone can easily survive two days (7am to 7pm a day later) and the battery charge seems to steadily improve (no idea the technical reason).

Sounds like that dock needs an update as well.

duncan - is your phone being held in jhb?

no, it was my ignorance re shipping. The phone is in the UK. I thought it was in SA because I got the invoice for customs clearance, but they pre-clear it. They say I'll get it by the 8th
