How I feel about the Nexus One
Yeah, got it a few days back, was testing it out, it quite cool, not very used to touch screens. Compare to my first touch screen phone I ever had, it was one of these MOTOROLA phone that u need your stylus to fully function with the phone(not accurate using ur fingers), and then comes the HTC TYTN 2, which yes, it was better than the MOTO, but at the end, wasn't very happy about the lags and the lack of application that it offers (it was such a mission to find them, so I sold it), but ya, I'd agree that the HTC TYTN 2 did what it should do, but, comparing to the NEXUS One, it not even close... First time I had a play around with the iPhone, I was amazed at how smooth and responsive the touch screen was, it was a totally different experience with the HTC TYTN2... Because most of the touch screen phones out there, like SAMSUNG,LG,etc, they not really cool with some of their touch screens, so yea...
So...out came the Nexus one from the box,switched it on, I was amazed! This piece of ART is as smooth and resposive as an iphone, which i was very surprised...
So, I started fiddling around with it, lol I bet all those N1 holders are same as me, the first thing i did is hold the screen and started fiddling with live wallpaper
it fun (although pointless)... I wasn't very used to the typing on the N1 (Because I also have a Blackberry, the phone has full qwerty keyboard, so it not as cool to type on something that is flat)...
The following is what I found interesting and worth pointing out:
1. The speech to text (Includes SMS, google search, google NAV), it funky and useful if you busy driving or something, but normally you need to be in a quiet environment, accuracy: 80-90%
2. Facebook,Twitter, Gmail, quickoffice,gmap,gtalk, like all other smartphone apps (Blackberry,iPhone,etc), N1 has all of it preinstalled, the interface is easy to use and it works pretty well!
3. Browsing experience. First of all, after the update (the server actually sent me the update when I had my phone switched on, was 15.2mb, used my 3G, took me a few min), I tried the browser, browsing with 3G on the N1 is fast, the multitouch function is cool, just like the iPhone, you can pinch to zoom like what you did on the iphone and not like the original firmware of the N1 where you can only zoom via touching the zoom in/out icon or double tap. And with the upcoming flash player for android system, it will make the whole browsing experience better once it released.
4. Battery Life. Just like what RogerWilcoZA mentioned, the battery is doesn't last long if you are continuous fiddling with it.
5. With the fast CPU, ROM and RAM, multitasking has never been easier. I was trying to browse web and in the mean time playing with a 3D game called Mystique, it ran pretty well, so with N1's spec, I said everything is possible comparing to other smartphones.
6. Market. Another thing I've realised (either than the lack of paid apps here in South Africa) is that the apps that you search returns a lot of unwanted apps, I'd say it a bit messy, you never get what you want, you have to go on scrolling down and eventually find what you want. That is one of the problems that bothers me. The market is not as organised as I thought.
7. One thing with N1, since the OS is designed by google, lot of apps made by GOOGLE are first designed to suit the N1, that is one of the reaon why I bought it. Like all other makes, they all getting the 2.1 update at a later stage. And with the new released Google buzz, google goggles, these apps are fully functioning on the N1, where I tried with my Blackberry, Buzz isn't set for that phone yet and with google goggle, it still far away with BBs to get them.
8. With the trackball, at first, you will feel it kinda pointless having one (that what I thought in the beginning),because this whole phone functions with a touch screen, why need a track ball? but after a while, you will realise that the trackball is very useful to scroll around the text you've typed, in other words, it easy to correct what you've typed.
Haven't thought about rooting my phone yet, because there is a chance of it getting bricked and I dont want that to happen after a week of getting this phone.
Overall, I'm very happy that I bought this phone and the design is pretty and fits in your pocket as it showed on google's site, but, the fact that all these apps needs internet access, it chows up your bill just like that without you even realizing it. I'm on a weekender contract, with sms bundle, so my basic monthly subscription is about R190, but I received a sms this morning (after 4 days using the Nexus1), my bill is running at R400, which I assume that (+- R150~R180) goes to the usage of the N1...which is a bit scary, lol, now I switched it to a prepaid to make my life easier...
So I'd suggest that all those google fans out there, N1 is really really worth it, just go the MyUS route, organise R6k, it a gadget that is worth waiting and worth spending on.
