Those of you that have the phone already - here are some questions...

How are you managing the data usage? Is it possible to enjoy the phone with an invalid APN? If you have a valid APN, does the phone use huge amounts of data just by being on?

I've turned my auto sync off and I havent done anything to the APN - I havent noticed much data usage at all, I cant tell you exact amounts but there has been no noticable increase in my airtime usage (i dont have any data packages).

Have you created an APN to use in SA at all?

Reading this thread kind of depresses me. I was all set to get my phone while in the US. Issues between the bank and google checkout process means i didnt manage to put my order through.

Glad to see a lot of you guys have got your phones and enjoying them.

hmmm, my contact in the US who is ordering and then shipping my N1 missed DHL - three times (it was going to his house when he was a work) and has been shipped back to Google. Oy, so delays.

However, it does allow me to add the new Dock to the order. Both the N1 and the Dock will fit into the small DHL box so it saves on shipping :-)

The dock looks great:

I also dont subscribe to any data packages, and when I got the phone I wasn't sure how much data was racking up. I installed an APN switch app that lets me turn the 3G on and off when i'm away from a wi-fi network - been working well for me but after having the phone for a week or two now I also don't think the data usage is abnormally high even if 3G was on the whole time. Don't quote me on that though :) Blunt let us know what your bill says at the end of the month, interested to hear what you averaged

Also something i recently discovered is that when the phone goes into sleep mode after a minute of inactivity, the phone shuts off the wi-fi radio to conserve battery. So I installed a wi-fi lock app that keeps it on, typically when I'm charging the phone. You can set the wi-fi radio to always be on manually via the settings of the phone as well but this just means i can switch the settings via the desktop widget.

Have you guys received the new Official update yet? It adds pinch zoom to gallery/maps/browser. Looks nice and smooth on youtube.

For those people who got their N1, I found this on Nexusoneforum, it the OTA update manual install guide, haven't tried it yet, lol my phone is still in transit, will be here by next week...lol, enjoy this~

1) Download the upgrade ZIP file from here: DOWNLOAD
2) Save it to your PC
3) Rename it update.zip (not case sensitive AFAIK)
4) Connect the phone via USB to your PC
5) on the N1 "mount the USB" (by pulling down the notification bar and clicking on Mount) so it's now a hard drive to your PC
6) copy the ZIP file named "update.zip" to the root of the new drive on your PC (the root of the SD Card)
7) unmount the USB (by pulling down the notification bar and clicking on Mount)
8) power down phone
9) Power on your phone with the power button, volume down key and trackball pressed
10) Enter Recovery mode by pushing down VOLUME key to select the option and POWER key to enter the menu
11) When you see the Android and Update icon (a swoosh) press POWER and the VOLUME UP KEY (at the same time)
12) Apply update.zip
13) Reboot when it tells you to.
14) Don't worry about the many reboots, it will take some time.

Hope to see some report back~

Where can you get it fixed if it breaks?

HTC usually have a worldwide warranty. Since it's not sold here they'll ship it to the US, but even HTC's repairs of local phones can take months - so it's not much of a compromise

just ordered my nexus one, should be on its way to my MyUS box soon.....wish me luck!

One thing people didn't seem to mention is that, in addition to the $529 for the phone and $61 for shipping, you must also pay $34 Florida sales tax. Bit of a bummer, but i suppose it's the price you pay for having awesome techmology...anyone wanna weigh in on whether it would be wise for me to underdeclare the phone (at say $250) to try and save on customs?

If you can get locked up for that then no.

go for it, you can always say you made a typo. Make it $259!
