@RogerWilcoZA
I assumed the Nexus wouldn't have multitouch if you ordered it from America (with regards to the Dolphin Browser)?

Correct, no multitouch on apps like the native browser, google maps etc. But the Dolphin browser can be downloaded for free off the app store and has full pinch zoom and expand functionality. The multitouch issue in the US is a legal thing between Google and Apple, and not any kind of limitation to the hardware. So once Google and Apple start playing nice we should hopefully see multitouch coming out via some kind of system update.

Alternatively you can Root your Nexus One, google it. Already people have exploited the browser software to include multitouch zooming (also apparently opens up some new apps in the market). Not sure if i'm ready to do that myself and potentially brick my new phone though...

Any of you lucky ones done a speed test yet and checked that you get stable 3G? Are the 3G problems that some of the US customers are experiencing an issue here as well?

I have, no problems at all down here in Cape Town. 3G was quick but didnt keep it on for long.I've got a speedtest app on my phone though, will run a test later and post some figures.

Signed up for a MyUS account last night ($10 once off), fired up my US proxy and ordered one of these bad boys off the google site last night with no hassles via google checkout.

You can still use your SA credit card but if you do sign up with MyUS, I would recommend contacting your CC provider and adding their address as a trusted source - got a call early this morning from Standard Bank Credit Fraud division making sure it was me that made the purchase. Anyway once I confirmed that with them, got the notification from Google that the order was processed almost immediately and was being sent overnight to my MyUS address.

Not sure what the delivery charge for MyUS will end up being, 2lb (0.9kg) packages costs $61 and the next tier is 5lb (2.3kg) costs $98 (plus customs tax once it reaches here) but whatever, still way cheaper than buying it off ebay. And compared to buying it from local online vendors, i'm laughing

Came across this page for people that dont have US/UK/singapore proxys to access the nexus site, if anyone goes through this route let me know if it works out.

edit: received confirmation from FedEx that the package is on route to MyUS dispatch in a 2lb package, $61 for delivery over to SA so should be jamming some time next week

I see that MyUS has an option for you to specify customs value and item description. I wanna order me a Nexus One, would it be wise to declare the package as some random item worth $120 so that there'll be no extra customs fees?

Also if you havent already, I would recommend creating a bogus Access Point, otherwise you could incur some serious data fees. I went into mobile network settings > Access Point Names >, then created a new APN called "Off" and APN i just put in there "blank".

There is an app for that. APNDroid.

Enjoy it Blunt- seriously impressed with how fast it got to our shores (ordered mine last Wednesday and picked it up on Monday)

Hey there,

Would you mind sharing what process you went through to get yours? Did you ship via MyUS? What did shipping cost? and what did the customs fees come too?

Yeah definately. I had no idea you could do that :( paid 1000 zars on customs and taxes

Sure, I shipped through MyUS. Total fees for that on top of the phone:

R76.53 for the MyUS subscription (10 dollars)

R547.06 for MyUS Delivery via DHL (61 dollars + 10 dollars insurance fee)

R1,074.29 paid to DHL (customs and taxes)

So all in all the whole experience cost me 6k

Did a speed test to the SAIX server in Cape Town so I guess this is as good as it gets.

So the next question is does blunt's phone (through the UK) have multitouch in the core apps? This isn't a killer feature for me, but if the UK version has it and the US doesn't, then it's a no-brainer which one I'll be ordering.

I think Blunts Nexus is a USA version. He just shipped it via UK. The UK version is not out yet. I believe if it does come out with full multitouch support, we could simply root our phones and install the UK rom. I want multitouch support for the keyboard, so I can tap more than one key at a time and overlapping taps wont mess with the flow of typing. Then there's SWYPE, maybe I'll go with that and conventional typing will be a thing of the past. It looks awesome, but I wonder how well it really works. Blunt and Roger, maybe try the Swype Beta and let us know how it goes?

Oh, the Nexus One dock is out!

http://www.google.com/phone/static/en_US-nexusone_tech_specs.html
Scroll to the bottom.

It can be bundled with your order for $45. It doesnt connect to the pc though. It's a charging station. It also takes an audio cable that you can connect to your sound system. Then the phone streams audio via bluetooth to the dock -> sound system. It also looks nice. The dock uses the metal pins on the bottom of the nexus. I guess they are for charging and not data.

Well just an update to my saga.
I thought all was lost when google suspended my checkout account but it seems they a bit more understanding than I thought.

I mailed them this morning a utility statement and a copy of my id. Explained my situation that I have to use a reshipper(myus) to get the phone to me as they don't ship internationally and I would hate to end up buying an iphone if I can't get the nexus one :P

So couple of minutes ago they send a reply. They unblocked my checkout acc and I can again place an order for the phone. No problems, just that I need to take care of a few things according to them(helpful advice).

So... here I go again.
time to look for a proxy :P

Can I buy this in stores overseas?

Heya,

I have someone coming from the USA to visit in a couple weeks. I'll also be in Ireland myself in a couple weeks.

Can you buy the Nexus One in stores like duty free?? Or is it online only?

Thanks!

Online only at this stage.

Thanks for the link, tried to install but the resolution isn't supported :(

Hmm, that's odd because I got the link from a youtube video demo'ing it on a Nexus One. My N1 should arrive later this week and I'll try to get it working.

I'll also post any success at getting Google Navigator working in SA
