Google RCS?

Yes, they do get income by amount of Data used. RCS is purely data driven like WhatsUp etc.
That might be the reason it's not working. SMS brings 50c in, but a few bytes or Kb will not add up to much.

People seldom use services like WhatsApp and now RCS for just sending plain text. Often photos and videos are shared which do add up in data usage, therefore revenue for the operator. Besides, why would Vodacom not allow RCS but continue to allow WhatsApp and Telegram on its network?

I think something is simply broken on Vodacom's side at the moment when it comes to RCS.

@jannievanzyl I just did a test. If I change my APN from lte.vodacom.za to internet then RCS starts working again on Vodacom's data network, so there is something on the lte.vodacom.za APN that is breaking RCS for us on Vodacom :crying:

This what Vodafone states assuming Vodacom SA has a server connection issues. We are aware of a SR for this problem, hoping for a speedy fix. 😀
Vodafone RCS:-
Messaging - Messages by Google, powered by Google's Jibe Cloud, will become the default messaging app on all applicable Android devices sold via Vodafone's carrier sales channels. Vodafone users will benefit from an interactive modern messaging experience by supporting the Rich Communication Services (RCS) standard, which works on all Android smartphones, regardless of model or mobile network. This includes supporting high quality photos and videos, read receipts, enhanced group messaging and encryption for one-to-one chats - all with the highest level of data privacy and security. Vodafone Business customers will also benefit from the expanded relationship with Google, as messaging becomes an increasingly critical channel for businesses of all sizes to connect with.

Using the "internet" apn or the "lte.vodacom.za" apn does not work for me. Cannot send / receive RCS messages with either apn.

@Jan @Ockie We hope that the intervention of Jan will resolve this Vodacom back system issue. The tragedy is that Vodacom employ so called technical staff = Device support staff (Billing Office HQ) location that clearly state "We do not support this RCS" when the facts indicate support of many years for RCS. It is no wonder this Vodacom forum is filled with customer problems etc.
There is a similar problem with "one number service between Iphone and Apple watch where customers pay for this Vas and the problem is not resolved. This is Vodacom backend server issue/ link to Apple.
The Ceo surrounds himself with a firewall of staff and is oblivious to these issues unfortunately.

Just to add some clarity. Vodacom used to run its own RCS service. This worked with Google Messages and Samsung Messages and on some Huawei phones. Vodacom then decided to stop doing RCS on their own and handed the reigns over to Google Jibe as of 06/03/2023.

So, RCS is technically not handled by Vodacom itself anymore, but by Google. However, it does seem that there is some kind of issue between the Vodacom network and Google Jibe servers.

Thanks @Ockie for the greater clarity and confirming the Google Jibe server issue. Question is when is Vodacom going to remedy this matter? It would seem that our other networks do not have problem. Thanks anyway.

Having the same problem.

Cannot send / receive RCS messages when using my Vodacom sim for data.

This is what I'm thinking too.
Thank you @Jan and concur with your thoughts. Unfortunately we cannot share some of the interactions/spinning and the level we had endure to get this simple answer.....!!!! So unnecessary from any large corporate like Vodacom, their owner Vodafone at 60% shareholding supports RCS.
All we require is for our Vodacom is to advise us if they will support RCS or not.

Thank you @Jan

RCS does work on Vodacom, and it has been working fine up until this issue. But as mentioned, RCS for Vodacom is now handled by Google Jibe, not Vodacom itself anymore like in the past.

Some response regarding the issue between Vodacom and the Google Jibe servers would be appreciated and a timeframe for a fix. Hopefully @Jan can get a answer from them.

Thank you @Ockie we appreciate the input hoping we see Vodacom resolve this sooner than later. This RCS service benefits those who have decisively chosen NOT to use WhatsApp or similar platforms as a preferred choice with society pressure trying their best to change the choices. The REFUSENICS will not change.

@Jan any feedback from Vodacom on this? Still not working on myside? Google Messages says connected, but when on Vodacom network (not wifi) it just wont send or receive.

Yo @Ockie you seem to be the only one really championing this here bro
When something is broken it needs to be fixed. I recommend Vodacom at work and in general. Therefore I want this rectified. It is a simple service which is a standard on GSM and Android and soon on IOS. If there is a glitch....fix it.
