Google has started rolling out passkeys as an additional method for signing into Google Accounts.

Google began working with the FIDO Alliance, Apple, and Microsoft on passkey support in 2022 and has rolled out the feature for Chrome and Android.

I'm sure big-tech and many government can't wait for things to be "passwordless". That way that don't have to force you to reveal a password, something which in some places they may not do as it amounts to testifying against oneself.

Biometrics? They just take them. Dongles, keys, cards? They just take them. Password that's encrypted something? They have a problem.

One of the benefits of passkeys is that they are promised to be shared across devices within the given ecosystem of each of the big tech companies. This means that if you lose your phone, your passkeys are securely stored (via end-to-end encryption) in the cloud. They can be restored when you get a new phone.

However, you can choose not to share your passkeys into the cloud, and if you do that and you only have one device, then yes, the passkeys will be lost, and you’ll have to re-register with every site you visit.

Yeah no. Only thing I've ever got stolen was an old laptop out of the back of a car and it was my fault for leaving it there.

Problem with passkeys is that they aren't so easy to backup and there's no way to back one up in memory so in some instances they are less secure. I don't see the idea of them catching on until they can be linked to the person and the computer can ascertain you're both alive and not under duress.
