I'm also considering getting the Iomega 1TB External Hard drive. Even though it is only 2 x 500GB drives it seems the price can't be beat... at least not as far as I can tell. The closest other 1TB external solutions I could find was R2700+.

Found some mixed user reviews on Amazon. Some people loved it, others complained that it runs hot and is loud. Also seems that it is quite heavy around 2kg+, so it's not something you'll want to use as a portable solution.

I guess if something does go wrong (hopefully not to the drives itself)) you can always use the drives in your PC or add one to the PC and get another enclosure for the other one. Decisions... decisions.

Just returned from IC in at the Centurion Mall where I wanted to take a closer look at the 24" Acer screen. They only had one sealed in a box and none on display. The other smaller screens like the 22" Samsung which I am also considering, looked like they have been given a mudbath and would surely deter any potential buyer.

Eish.

That is not a bad idea even if something doesn't go wrong...Still cheaper than buying 2 x 500GB drives...Just :p

Yup. I think the 500GB drives go for around R1100 each. So you still score a little bit.

Anyone gonna be able to go check out the Iomega in person and report back? My nearest IC is 200km away, so if I'm gonna get one I'll have to order online.

Well not everyone is lucky enough to be able to buy from Rectron. Guess it's more or less break-even if you can. Guess the enclosure should also be worth around R200 or so... :D

Yip, IC sell the 500GB for R1100 and most other places are around that much as well. So, with the enclosure it is definitely a big saving.

Just a case of whether the enclosure is loud, heavy and hot...whether it is easy to dismantle and remove the drives as well...

Well I took the plunge, as I have a few other smaller Iomega external drives and have been very happy with them. It IS heavy! It seems to contain 2 drives that format as a single drive. I have not found it noisy, nor particularly hot, but the external power brick thing gets quite hot. I reformatted it as NTFS and that took a few hours, admittedly on a slow PC. Quite a motherfscker of a unit! We shall see if it behaves well.

Nice. I'm about to order one myself so let us know how it performs when actually trying to copy files from/to it. The noise and heat thing I think is very subjective and I'm guessing the people that complained about that were just finding fault, or that they didn't have any experience with similar drives.

Well, just ordered mine from their site. Shipping adds another R74 to the price but I can live with that. Did anyone get the 3D Secure thing working for their Credit Cards? According to ABSA it's supposed to allow you to register for 3D secure when buying from a participating merchant, but nothing like that happened when I ordered from Incredible.

Took the plunge...Got the 1TB drive...:)

She is a beast indeed. Nice looking, quite heavy, about the size of two normal external enclosures...She is not running hot atm, a bit noisy, but nothing too hectic. All in all I am pretty stoked :D

You have a lot more money than me :D

Do some benchmarks, I'd like to know it's read/write speed :)

Congrats by the way ;)

There should probably be some software on Google, but what I meant was just to see how long it takes you to copy about 10GB to/from the drive :)
