A 980 and 1060 is about the same performance though, right? I'd rather get the new generation then.

a 970 and a 1060 should have similar performance, i think a 980 will have better performance.

Apparently i was wrong, watched a few benchmarks, surprisingly the 1060 outperforms the 970 and is about equal to the 980.
Strange as die 980 was a higher end card, and the 1060 is a entry level card.

Check carb, the 980x's are going for +- R6000, last week there was one for R5200

Yeah, I wouldn't buy a 980 new for more than R5k.

That one had no cooler so you'd have needed to spend Another R1k+ on a WC unit or source a heatsink somehow. It's not exactly representative of normal prices. Average prices for a 980ti are still around R7k, but it depends on the model. The cheapest tis that had no problems were around R6700 for a stock card with no warranty. I know people who went back to the 980ti from a 1070 because they were getting better raw performance on the ti.

Yes they are very similar, 1060 wins some games, 980 wins some. I personally wouldn't buy a 980 over a 1060 but you also have to consider that the equivalent 1060 MSI card is R500 more than this.

It depends on models. The 980 tends to oc better. My 980 is better than most 1060s and clocks in at 4700 at time spy.

Yes, Maxwell is a better overclocker generally. Just that Maxwell has no support at all for async compute functions which will become more prevalent in newer games. 1060 also has newer DP and HDMI standards and h.265 HW level decoding.

You've been hiding under a rock the last 2 to 3 months hey? ;)

Nope, I was not. I just assumed as the RX480 is a very tiny fraction slower than the 1060 (only in dx11) , but the 970 = RX480, one would then think the 980 > 1060.
Well I've only caught up in the last 2 to 3 months myself, but regarding, "Strange as die 980 was a higher end card, and the 1060 is a entry level card." it's not really strange that the next gen entry level enthusiast gamer card is now on par with the previous gen higher end card. What's more crazy than that IMO are the hectic price drops and bang for buck one now gets :)

I think you'll see the RX 480 pull further ahead of the 970 going forward, I reckon with newer titles coming up we'll see more 980 level performance.

I got a message saying the pricing was incorrect and I will be refunded. Edit: it was an error in loading and Raru communicated it asap. These guys are great and I have much respect for them. We all know this was too good to be true! I believe they're refunding R50 to everyone who EFT'd before the error was identified. True gentlemen indeed!

Yip, i like the RX480 and its DX 12 performance is good, I do feel VR is the next big thing and would love to know how the RX480 will preform VR wise.

No man's sky is almost here and i still only have a crappy 750Ti :-(
