HD PVR replaces SD PVR

I think it is great that My broadband is giving us the latest news regarding everything that is about technology. If My broadband did not have this article about the HD PVR, I would not have know about it.

I agree, I hope that Multichoice also quickly bring out a HD PVR without any bugs and that can show two channels and not one. Is Multichoice going to give me two HD PVR's to watch two channels at once? :mad:
 
I've had an HD unit since the before the Olympics. Initially it was a little slow but other than that - no problem. Can't figure out what the fuss it about really. It works just fine.
 
I've also had an HD decoder since roughly when they were launched...

Have had one or two small issues, but nothing major...
 
Multichoice's service generally SUCKS...

A large percentage of the ads on DSTV are ads for DSTV... Hello, only people with access to DSTV will see the ads! At least, they give you a change to go to the loo, grab a beer, turn the meat on the braai, etc...

As for HDTV - like all new technology, WAIT before you buy. It even goes for cars, never buy when the new model hits the showroom floor, EVER! Companies use clients to do the testing they should have done before the launch!
 
Also got the HD PVR at launch time and initially was nearly unusable. It has improved a lot with subsequent firmware upgrades.

My main gripes:

- They removed support for the SD PVR IR codes recently forcing me to go through a lot of pain to rebuild the IR codes.

- When the program switche to ads, the audio breaks up and the only way to get around this is to switch channels. It's something to do with the buffering.

I've installed a remote controlled relay on both the HD and SD decoders so I can reboot them remotely. :rolleyes:

I have no problem with my hd pvr, can be a bit slow on the epg, but do not need to go ballistic about it, also got mine just before the olympics, and the numerous software upgrades, but its working fine and the picture quality on the HD channel (as well as all the other channels), make up for it all

You can buy a 2nd HD PVR and link them and have Dual View or a cheapo R300 decoder which you can link to your HD PVR for a 2nd viewing channel. It's not ideal but will do the job.
 
I don't know what software updates they released that makes the HD PVR "Stable"... Maybe I did not get the memo coz my HD-PVR is the most useless, unstable and slow piece of hardware I have ever come across. It's really pathetic!

And now they want to get rid of the SD-PVR and replace with the HD-PVR... LoL... Someone is obviously feeling very brave! Good luck to you Multichoice.. You going to have a a lot of complaints thats for sure!
 
Dualview HD is only now surfacing in Europe going by adverts in the Satellite & Broadband magazine (available @ your local CNA).

They're DVB-S2 (H.264) compliant which is a new standard for satellite receivers. Not cheap BTW.

Eventually Multichoice will probably launch such a product.

I'd rather that they sort out the software bugs in the current HD PVR before any other developments.

Got my HD PVR last month. Honestly, it's slower than my 3-year old SD decoder but like Gothan says above, the picture quality is brilliant (compared to previously). There are issues and I have to reboot the thing now and then.

Itz not even a year old, with time there should be more channel offerings and better features added...

I was thinking of getting DSTV (HD) later this year, but I want to use the HDMI cable for my audio and video.
 
The last upgrade was early December, after which they promised to give us an update by the 2nd week of January. It is already the 2nd week of February and we have had no update as to when then next update is expected to happed or what it will fix.

The first 3 upgrades solved a few minor issues, which the bulk of the issues still unaddressed,

This is true. You have to use an HDMI cable to carry the video signal to your HD-TV and then use S/PDIF for audio. If you use the HDMI cable for both the surround sound language channel on M-NET HD and Movie Magic is extremely soft and stereo only.

They say that OpenTV is the operating system and that many overseas broadcasters are facing the same issues. They have to wait for the manufacturers of OpenTV to upgrade their software.

This is one of my biggest let downs!
 
Well I have my HD in my bedroom for me & the wife & the kids use the SD PVR we need 2 channels for them alone & the record movies & the rest! now what this is really not good for my happy family!!

It's okay I will just get the kids to call Multi Choice see how they deal with a 4 & 5 Year old crying!!
 
My problem with this is still that I don't need a PVR.
I want a HD decoder that does not cost the same amount as a playstation 3.
I don't need dual view, and I don't need to record anything.

Possible anyone knows of something like that for me?
 
SD PVR Hard drive

One of the "old" parts has to be the PATA/IDE drive.

I have been toying with the idea of upgrading the drive for a while now, but now realised
that it becomes impossible to even still get 500Gb PATA drives.

Any idea if a SATA drive with SATA-2-IDE converter-card will work. It works on normal
PC's, and this is just a PC. Right?.........

Nice 1.5 or 2 Terrabyte with converter card, and 800+ hours of recordings would suite me just fine......

You can still get 500 GB IDE drives from Matrix. But those converter cards will also work... providing there is enough space behind the drive for the card to fit in. They are not large... about six by six CM. But there is not a huge amount of space inside those enclosures.
