Help exeeded Office cap without permission.

Goto him, tell him the truth, claim ignorance, offer to buy the amount you used and make sure it never happens again.

The meeting with the boss must have gone on longer than anticipated. Or else they blocked access to mybroadband.co.za too...
 
i LOL'd at the last 5 or so posts but fully agree with moggie

I think this guy got far too caught up in the 'what if' of a worst case scenario.
 
It would be great if we could know the outcome of the meeting with the boss. I think there might be a lesson for a few people in it if the OP would post the "basic" results here.
 
I don't use my offices cap but my own. I use a PPPoE dialup account.

Be honest with the boss, tell him it was a honest mistake, and you didn't mean any harm. Offer to pay for data used. Tell him also you noticed a issue with the network configuration in the process, and that the wireless not being metered will be fixed. Also block p2p, as it have no purpose on a company network.

And probably also a bridge from your office network to the internet. Even if you take the PC off the network while it is using PPoE, viruses can still infect the network when the PC reconnects to the network. A network policy to block PPoE while logged onto the network might work to prevent it (won't work if the person does not sign onto the network though).

By default Smoothwall does not allow PPPoE passthrough. Which is why I like it :D

And I will not allow PPPoE passthrough, no matter what the circumstances. Finish en klaar.
 
What a disgusting thread. People actually giving advice on covering up issues. Pray you never work for me, any of you, advocating this coverup, if it's one thing I can't stand it's a liar. Much rather go to the person and say what genuinely happened, offer compensation, that is the mature and responsible path.

Can you imagine what his boss will think if he gets one of those letters for downloading illegal content? Can you say witchhunt?

Note = Not all were telling how to cover up. Best is to be honest about mistake....

Even better, tell him you were testing the security on the network, and while doing so came across a flaw which chewed up the month's cap. He might even promote you. But then again, he probably won't.

That will only work if he was asked to test the security. Plus, finding a security hole, does not allow you to abuse that security flaw.
