I advise the "dude" to learn about the difference between *Undergraduate* and *Postgraduate* degrees. For the record, my undergraduate is in communications. My honours degree is in telecoms REGULATORY environment.

Nocturnal - Yes, it is difficult to point out who is to blame for the continued disconnections. One thing we know fo sure is that it is not the consumer's fault, yet it is the consumer who pays. I, as well as thousands of others, suspect that Telkom is to blame, whether they do it deliberately or not. I think that this matter needs to go to the courts or at least independent arbitration to try and elucidate on who is to blame.

Well throwing statutes around is all and well Debbie2 , but show me exactly where it states that Telkom guarrentees you an absolutely uninterrupted data service on a voice line ???.

Most of them are just legalese for a "best effort" and nothing more and nothing less.

Tell me ... is your line also disconnected when you chat for say an hour ???.

Is your modem Telkom or ICASA approved ???.

and picking up more on you relatively stupid remarks... Debbie has every right to complain because the service Inifini Call assumes there will be no disconnections... and as an organisation should try and avoid it.

I think your gripe is misplaced. I agree that it would be difficult for Telkom to guarantee no line drops. But I remember the frequent disconnections when I used dialup and I have tons of friends who complain about this phenomenon. I am lead to believe that there is a deliberate effort on the part of Telkom to disconnect people to milk them.

Perhaps some people who posted here are not going as far as I am now, but be it through technical inadequacies or deliberate actions, these disconnections happen too often. And they don't happen while you are voice chatting on the phone.

They happen (or it seems like it) when you are connected to an ISP. This will be a very difficult thing to prove and the best ICASA can do to protect Joe Public is to force Telkom to make concessions on the way dialup users connect to the Internet. There haven’t been any major developments on that front that would leave the general public gob smacked! In an environment with good competition these things happen on a regular basis and in a fashion that accelerates progress. Here we are, thousands of Internet users with one thing in common.

WE KNOW THERE IS SOMETHING BETTER OUT THERE AND WE AREN’T GETTING IT!

I still say we need flat rated dialup Internet in this country for the masses!

Unlike the majority of you who bitch and moan about the cap and the high costs when sitting at home while pulling down porn or Mp3's ... I worked for several companies that had critical remote sites that depended upon Telkom connectivity to pay my salary and contribute to the country by providing a service to millions of people and in paying our taxes.

While they are a monopoly and abuse it when it suits them and they are bloody expensive seen in world comms context there are some good folks working there that I have dealt with and their infrastructure is world class compared to crap you find in the rest of Africa (see Nigeria's Nexitel for example).

Having written some modem code in my life to over 8,000 remote terminals there is NO and I repeat NO telecoms company that will promise you no disconnects on their voice grade lines.

I asked for these mysterious laws and license agreements dealing with dialup but then I get ****ing ignored because I am suddenly now a troll when I ask a legtimate question !!!!.

I know its an overpriced service... so I settled for a 1MB wireless connection instead, cuz apparently this 'world class' telecomunications company (Telskum)
couldnt supply me with ADSL cuz um I have er.. fibre optics... er.. which could
be fixed with a DSLAM but... er... they couldnt do this for me... cuz guess why?
It would be too expensive for them

eh, vowthorn. your exchange being on fibre has nothing to do with whether you can get adsl or not. it depends on the local leads from your exchange to your house - of which all is copper (with the exception of the corporates that have E1 or radio). fibre is used mostly for backhaul networks - in fact, to provide adsl, fibre on the backhaul is a prerequisite as telkom dont offer ATM at the exchange level over any other medium at the moment, and ATM is the back haul carrier for ADSL. If Telkom cant supply you with ADSL its because of two reasons : a. you are two far from the exchange, or b. their is no DSLAM or ATM infrastructure at the exchange (or its full).
