Hi everyone/anyone

I am moving from a small town in the northern cape to Hermanus(Voëlklip ). My best option was a 4Mbps Adsl line from telkom. I assumed that I would have more and better options in Hermanus, but after a quick look it seem that best option again will be a 4Mbps line from telkom... If there is any options that I am missing please share? Anyone in Hermanus specially in Voëlklip what's your internet solution?

Thanks

I stay in an estate and have a 4mg line that is so so. We are having fiber being installed and should go live end June. As for rest of town thats it from Telkom. Some are using Sonic in Sandbaai and Onrus and seem to be happy.

I stay in onrus and use a WISP. I had a few quotes done, but in the end Maxitec had best price and excellent service.

I know fiber is being installed by openserve in the greater hermanus area, but until your area has fiber, wifi with a local WISP is not a bad idea.

I use rain (lte is covered in Hermanus) unlimited data during day, and wisp after 5pm. (using a mikrotik wifi ap with usb modem and wisp ethernet link)

The only reason I do this, is the wisps starts throttling your speed around 150gb usage a month

Not sure about Telkom LTE, hard to use their coverage map on my phone. But there is partial Rain Mobile coverage:

Thanks Guys

I will probably get Maxitec to do a site survey next month once I've settled in. hopefully the 6Mbps WISP will be available to me.

I will give an update once I'am sorted.

so OP, just wondering what you went with in the end?

After some good speeds from Maxitec, for the last few weeks I now find an almost impossible usage speed at night between 6pm and 8pm from them. I assume due to people getting home, so some real crappy shaping occurs.

:( Damn, really thought my solution was working. Not easy in the platteland.

Hi Guy sorry for not giving feedback sooner, but here it is:

In short I got 6Mbps "uncaped" from maxitec. My frist choice was sonic only because of price and FUP but there was no line of sight. It's not fair for me to report on the speeds yet because I haven't had a chance to test it properly(peak/offpeak and download/stream). I am also not sure what I'am supposed to get.... I ask for a 6Mbps and my first quote and invoice showed 6Mbps but my last invoice showed 4Mbps.
They are not keen if you want to use your own router. the technician like to use there own router and keep every thing on default. I still insisted to use my own router(asus ac52u) just had to turn off the DHCP.

Will try and give an update on the speeds after I've tested it.

Ah ok, cool.

yeah I also unplugged their router and installed my own Mikrotik. I basically keep the router they installed as a backup should my Mikrotik fail.

RAIN without a high-gain LTE antenna on top of your house is, is not worth it.

Unfortunately any form of wireless internet is unstable in Voelklip.

Does anyone know if fibre internet has been installed on Marine Drive between the Windsor Hotel and Bistro restaurant on the corner?

Looks like there's two options for Fiber in the Hemel and Aarde Estate. Open Serve and Lightstruck. Not sure which one I should go for. Someone in Hermanus proper has been waiting for couple of weeks for the Open Serve install which sounds a bit like old telkom experience. So i'm leaning towards Lightstruck. But I don't have access to the house right now to see if there's already a CPE installed. I suspect not.

I own a house in Hermanus and recently moved to Lightstruck. This is Hermanus Westcliff and Open Serve is also available. The Open Serve infrastructure is overhead, so the cables were installed next to the standard telephone lines. If you do opt for Open Serve they have to come out and still pull the cable from the telephone pole to the house.

I opted for 20mbps line through Yutility as ISP. It works really well. The CPE installation was outsourced to a local Hermanus IT company and they did a really good job.

Openserve pricing is much better. Our Openserve installs in the area are all flying through(3-4 days); so just ask your ISP to check. We’re also on Lightstruck, slightly higher monthly though. Drop me a PM if you need a hand
