How did you STOP smoking?

My girlfriend is a smoker and she wants to quit but says it's very difficult for her. Goes through like 5-10 a day. I tried to incentivise her by witholding sex.

Yeah, I didn't properly think that one through.

Yeah, I didn't think that one through, properly.

You were only punishing yourself

I smoked for 20 years, I had my last cigarette beginning of January 2018. Have not had a smoke now in 11 months.

How did I do it?

You have to have a reason to stop smoking. I had 2 good reasons.

I bought a decent vape. One that had enough battery power to last a day. I also bought the coil kit to make my own coils. Safes a lot of cash.

I started to vape with 3mg nicotine for the first 4 weeks. Then would vape 1 tank with nicotine and one without. The one tank nicotine 2 without. Then 1 nicotine and 3 without.

I then went of the nicotine completely. I was of the vape then by June.

2 things make you fail. 1 the nicotine addiction. This can be overcome by reducing your intake. Then it’s easier to get off it.

Second thing that makes you fail is the smoking habit. A smoke after eating, smoke after a drink. It took me easy 3 months to break the habit of waking up and having a smoke. You substitute with the vape. It helps. Just stick it out.

Currently I have friends and coworkers that smoke and it does not bother me at all when chatting to them as they smoke away.

The health benefits are worth it. Food does taste amazing now.

Denial and vain imaginings I suspect

Kudos to you. Well done, admirable...I know how hard any addiction can be.

Absolutely right, I stopped cold turkey back in 1996, after smoking from the age of 14. The reason was health and to break the habit I chewed gum and stayed out of pubs for about 6 months or so. Never even had a puff since.

I am really struggling with stopping. Managed to stop for 7 months and I found myself smoking again, so angry with myself right now

It happens.

Just stop again.

I stopped for a year, fell off the wagon for 6 months, stopped again and remain smoke free 13 years later

Edit - I used Allan Carrs 'Easy way' book

Having 4 heart attacks over 3 days was all the convincing I needed to finally take quitting seriously. As the number 1 standalone contributor to heart disease (the biggest killer from smoking), it was either quit the stinkies for good, or die - it wasn't a difficult choice to make, really.

Owing to the insane amount of stress my heart, body and mind have gone through, I opted not to even attempt cold turkey, and have gone the vaping route, cutting down nicotine content as a I go along (currently on 12mg). Yes, it gets a lot of hate, but it's helped me get off the analogues, and that's all that matters to me.

I'd reduced the amount I'd smoked in the last couple of years significantly (down to 5 a day maximum), and I started vaping over the same period, too. I think I was on about 3 cigarettes a day when I had my MI's - the extra nudge just helped me get that number down to zero.

Yes, there have been rough days - I smoked for 26 years - it's not something I was going to unlearn overnight. It's basically been part of existence since adolescence, and I sometimes randomly lus for the real thing (triggers are that after food feeling and the first coffee in the morning). But vaping has definitely helped. I know it won't be for everyone, but no-one's addiction and way of dealing with it is the same - so find something that works for YOU.

I haven’t smoked for over 40 years. Was 50 a day and gave up three times. First time whilst still in RAF, stopped cold one Friday night, carried a freshly opened packet of Senior Service (untipped) and used to take it out of my battledress and sniff several times a day. Didn’t think I last a day. Two years later I started again but only in the afternoon, then full time. Gave up after about I think two years again. Not smoking when I came to South Africa but started again about 8 years later but only Ritmeester Juniors and only for about a year. All the time giving up “cold turkey”. Probably very lucky.

Cold Turkey. Ran out of smokes, was to pissed to drive to the shops & too lazy to walk!

Wife & friends smoked rubbish (my puff was Camel Plain or Filter or Gauloise, everything else smelt & tasted like shyte) so I couldn't even cadge one off them.

So decided it was a good time to pack it in. That was 8 years ago.

To help with the initial breaking of the habit I pickled 10kg's of onions & peppers. Every time I wanted a puff I had an onion or a chilli. The first 2kg were eaten before they'd even started pickling! :X3:

After that it was easy, simply a question of byt vas & keep breaking the habit by having a pickle every time I craved.

Tossed the last 1,5kg odd of pickles away as they'd gone soggy over the course of a year.

Very little craving - Camel have changed their blend, so plain & filter no longer have the disticntive aroma (don't even exist under the same name I think?), but Gauloise get me salivating every single time. Thankfully no longer available locally, but have a friend who buys at duty free.................

Get some mild anti-depressants to take the craving away then ween yourself off of the anti-depressants.
CBT could work too.

I was listening to this and thought it sounded very familiar (19:55):

Vaping has proven to be by far the easiest way to get off cigarettes for good. I have been vaping for 8 years at a low 3 mg nic after trying all else over many years.

I fell and broke my leg 2 weeks ago and I had to have an operation. I spent a week in hospital not being able to move. So I had no choice, I couldn't smoke. I decided to use the 'opportunity' to stop completely. So far so good! :)

Threat revive...
Anyway, i had bronchitis, could not suffer a puff, and though "maybe its a good time to quit.

That was 19 days ago, and have not lit, smoked or puffed a cig, rollie or vape since. The urge is STRONG, but the resistance seems to be stronger..

Plus side.. lungs and throat are feeling amazing!

I smoked for about 16 years... During the last stages just before quitting, I smoked about 40 per day. I forced myself to keep it to one every hour, but that frustrated the hell out of me and I found myself counting the seconds to the next smoke.
After about 2 weeks I realised that if I had quit, I would've been over the worst part already, gave my last packet away and quit... That was 6 years ago...
Look, I am not going to lie and say it was easy. It was HELL for me and my family for the first 3 months, but it does get easier over time.
Ive also got a theory about quitting smoking. If it is easy for you to quit, you will easily start again. If it was extremely difficult to quit, you will think thrice about starting again.

So, still going strong?

Yeah im well within the first 3 months still, and definitely not easy. Plus, the SO smokes, which doesn't make things any easier.
