Since 2017 my bill has gone up from about R500pm to R950pm. 8 years of increases. Staying in same place with usage not changing much. No solar. So that's about 8.3% per year.
Yea that is the bugger with compounding 8.3% will diuble the bill every 8.5years

R5.59per unit, albeit this is UK rates.

Gas (which is used for heating geyser, heating and stove) R1.45per unit.

My last bill's line items for the privilege of being connected:

Service & admin charge @ R3.27 / day for 35 days: R 114.45 ex. vat
Network capacity charge @ R12.13 / day for 35 days: R424.55 ex. vat
Generation capacity charge @ 0.72 / day for 35 days: R25.20 ex. vat
Are you Eskom direct?

I've only got the network capacity charge. What are the rest for?

Yes, eskom direct.

I also only had the network capacity charge prior to April 1st - since then these were added. Fsck knows what they're for. I bet they couldn't tell you either. Convinced it's just a move to extract money regardless of consumption because they're charged per day for the full billing period.

They also added two consumption-based fees as well for good measure. Ancillary Service Charge (charged per every kWh used for billing period) @ R0.0041/kWh and same with Network Demand Charge @ R 0.2637/kWh.

If you have solar you can save on the latter two but will pay more because of the time-based charges. End result is use less, pay more.

I buy R800 worth of electricity per month. This month it got me 194 units, so R4.12 per unit. City of Ekurhuleni.

We have gas geysers in the main house and cottage, and a gas stove/oven in the main house. Minimal light usage during the evenings and solar lights outside. If we don't need it right now, it is switched off.

We have multiple tiers.
Use around 900kw a month. R3.22/kW all incl.

Hessequa muni.

Thankfully don't have to buy often but when I do, it hurts:

Added gas as well as it does all my water heating
So our (ESKOM direct) standing charge works out to more than the UK? Or do they charge for generation (the 3 separate things on our bill) separately as well or are they all included under the standing charge?

What you see is what I pay.

R3.01 from the body corp including VAT and a 10% service fee. I thought this was steep but seeing some responses here soothe me a bit

Normally they reset the purchase stats at the beginning of each month - so it doesn't matter how you spread it out through the month.

Thats how it works in Tshwane - you level up the rate table as you buy more

It never did
So looking at the new Tshwane rates structure, for example, if I buy 1000 units on the first of the month, I will be charged R4.09ex per unit and if I load again let's say last week of the same month, I will still be charged R4.09ex per unit. Is this correct?

No, the first 1000 will be roughly 3.50ex as you're still buying 100 from the first tier, 299 from the next tier, 249 for the next tier and than 350 from the last tier.
The next 1000 yes would be the full price.

I posted this on another thread.....

CoCT lowered their rate per unit from R 3.44 to R 3.38 as of July - this for the first 600 units.

Over 600 units for the month and it went from R 4.75 per unit to R 4.42 .

However the monthly Home User Tariff went up from R 281.78 to R 390.87 .

Prices all Vat inclusive.

When I saw R5.59 I initially thought you might be another resident somewhere in South Africa who's paying a similar rate to me, but saw the UK part and was like "ah shucks... i'm the only one being scammed." At least thats UK rates.

I am paying R5.22 per unit in Cape Town, South Africa (prepaid electricity, Eskom Direct).
Hectic price gouging..... Have you tried finding out why it is that high? It's over 100% more than others
I haven't taken a conceited effort to dig and investigate why this is the case. I really should actually. I am being scammed. Imagine having to choose between buying that weekly wine, or having to keep the lights on :) .
