Enjoy, you did the right thing.

I posted this on another thread.....

CoCT lowered their rate per unit from R 3.44 to R 3.38 as of July - this for the first 600 units.

Over 600 units for the month and it went from R 4.75 per unit to R 4.42 .

However the monthly Home User Tariff went up from R 281.78 to R 390.87 .

Prices all Vat inclusive.
So overall 3% increase

When I saw R5.59 I initially thought you might be another resident somewhere in South Africa who's paying a similar rate to me, but saw the UK part and was like "ah shucks... i'm the only one being scammed." At least thats UK rates.

I am paying R5.22 per unit in Cape Town, South Africa (prepaid electricity, Eskom Direct).

I haven't taken a conceited effort to dig and investigate why this is the case. I really should actually. I am being scammed. Imagine having to choose between buying that weekly wine, or having to keep the lights on :) .

How are you paying R5.22 on eskom direct ?
Are you on some business tarrifs?
Besides the one im on the other tarrif for eskom is R3.40 per kW plus network charges (depending on tarrifs R14 to R74 per day) are you padding the per day to the calculation?

I asked how many units he uses but no response.

I didn't see that, sorry. I don't use as much I think. Because it is winter, I am using around 130 units (heater, which I am trying not to use). Before winter, I use around 60 - 70 units. What is interesting is, usage patterns don't seem to matter - it seems like I am billed R5.22 regardless of usage. I know CoCT applies different pricing depending on usage. I was paying R4.66 per unit early 2025, until the price hike in April 2025 where the cost per unit went up to R5.22.

This wont be an issue when I move out and move to an old apartment under CoCT power grid.

Ah, I thought maybe you were including line fees or something.

unless you on a TOU Tariff all eskom tariffs are the same through the year
besides the increase they only got ri of stepped tariffs this year and split the billing on most of the tariffs to show more honestly what they billing for (used to include it all in one before
any idea what tariff they got you on? - really interested to find out cause really seems off for eskom
