this is a private prepaid not via municipality or eskom direct
think of land lords or complexes that have 1 meter with the provider and private sub meters, you get a company to manage the prepaid for the sub meters they charge a set fee (not IBT) and extra fees - I dont want to say illegal but skirt a lot of regulations

Most sectional title setups have this. The complex has a main 3 phase meter from the council or Eskom and then they have their sub meters for each unit in the complex. They get the lower council rates while they charge more for electricity for each unit in the complex.

My wife has a property with 3 sublets on it. Similar arrangement, she actually makes a profit from the electricity that her tenants use. Not deliberate, the company that did the meters made the system that way.

There is one feed into the house and meter that is by citipower, then they got a company to add sub meters for the other 3 that were built a few years back. The meter company takes their cut and my wife makes a bit of a profit from the electricity they buy.

I dont fully understand it but she did explain it to me and thats how the sectional title places are doing it. They are most definitely making money from this.

I guess in sectional titles it helps when people dont pay levies at least the electricity portion the rest of the owners arent covering these defaulters. or owners with bad tenants arent stuck footing the electricity portion

Got my bill with the new increase. I used 235 units which is an average month. Cost was R1220. Two years ago the same units cost R797. History is all documented with my rental invoices.

That is expensive. On postpaid that would cost 611 rand. Roughly the same on Prepaid with citipower. The rate is 2.6 rand per kWh.

I'm guessing City Power. Not sure. It's not prepaid. The fixed cost is several hundred rands it seems. Here's May 2025 when I travelled and wasn't at home for a couple months. Only 39 units used. This was before the 1 July increase.

Nah fixed on CP would be 1100 for service fees, this looks like a third party, you're more than likely in a complex and they are either using a third party or taking the main bill and they are chunking it out which would include the service and connection fee.

A work friend is being charged 3.6 a kWh before vat. Also Citipower but its from 3rd party as he is in a complex.

You probably have a similar arrangement but with higher fees. You should have been some 350 rand with VAT with no 3rd party involved.
