No, youre wrong... its not actually open to discussion, as much as this disturbs you. In this instance nobody actually cares about your opinion since the rights are laid down in law and not open to discussion.

In all seriousness though: Lectures involve an explaining of concepts, hints at what is more or less important come test time, references to other articles and readings to do outside of the standard textbook, the covering of case studies etc.. If all your lecturer is doing is essentially reading from the textbook then your lecturer is incompetent or lazy. I got far more out of my lectures.

Concepts in lectures: sure but these guys aren't great at explaining. They may know it, but are damn right horrible at expressing
Student: Can you please explain how xyz works again. I didn't get abc.
Lecturer: See me after the lecture.

Student: I'm sorry I don't understand how...
Lecturer: *cuts student off* Try to understand. /moves on

Student: Could you please slow down?
Lecturer: Think faster.

The last two are the same guy.

Wouldn't know about other articles and case studies etc. Physics is physics, maths is maths no matter what textbook you use.

Again, not there to baby you. Show the lecturer at a later stage that you've put in effort, but still can't grasp something and I'm sure he/she will help. They're not monsters but remember that they have hundreds upon hundreds of undergrads to deal with in addition to their own research work. You are not the centre of their universe even if you are the centre of yours.

Yes but some textbooks do a lousy job of explaining some concepts and the lecturer is often aware of a better source. They will inform you of these provided you don't skip the lecture because you're too busy rioting.

1. You're definitely not pressed for time if you're one and half chapters ahead or every other class being taught by other lecturers.

2. Nobody is asking them to baby anyone. But explain the bloody thing if the student doesn't get it. There's only ever been three lecturers who taught yah, this guy knows what he's doing. And no one said they're world revolves around us but if you're giving a lecture BE THERE. Don't be half there and half elsewhere.

3. Yeah some recommend other textbooks. Of which some have their own names on them. Just saying.

For one you can't kick students out of lectures. Especially not for asking questions. That's just asking for a **** storm. You may close the door to late comers but kick people out nah fam. Secondly these guys aren't doing what they're paid for. Especially the guy who won't even attempt to answer questions. Third, who said any of the students referred to here are me. All different students, none of them me.

Either way, the lecturer is offering you his personal time outside of the lecture to give you personal attention to address your problem. This is something you should be glad for, not upset by. Many lecturers will not give you this opportunity.

You're doing just that actually. They're not half there and half not, they simply won't waste their time on you. You're one in hundreds. You need to show these lecturers that you're worth their time. Do the extra work, look it up. Then tell them which avenues of reserach you've exhausted and which aspects you don't understand. Once you come at them with that they will more than likely help you. Lecturers are not obligated to spoonfeed you. This isn't high school. If you're looking to be spoonfed you don't belong in tertiary education.

I was once told by a lecturer when I asked a question about second year to not worry about it because I would never make it to second year anyway. I didn't whine about it. Instead I worked my arse off and I made it to second year with marks right up at the top of my class. Once that happened his whole attitude changed. Remember they're on the lookout for kids that show potential to come join their post graduate units.

In short: Man the fsck up.

and some genuinely recommend decent journal articles to read that cover the topic beautifully, or chapters from other textbooks, freely available in the library, that will give you a greater understanding than you get out of the lectures. I've met lecturers like that often. You have a very unhealthy view on lectures. If you want that first class pass you have to work for it and that includes attending your lectures.
