How to install Windows 10 - A guide

Did mine last night. Took all of 20mins. I cant delete my Windows.old though. Says I must be logged on as SYSTEM. It's 22GB!!!

Just tried to do a manual update. checked my update history and see that my pc has been trying to upgrade to windows 10 for the last 2 days, but failed each time. Not sure why.

My windows 7 has tried updating numerous times now, under the update history, each time the Win 10 update reports failed....

mine did that on the one laptop and found out that it was already downloaded so just started the install and it upgraded to windows 10 :)

started the install from where? My PC does auto updates, I never fiddle with that stuff and settings.

how did you start the install? I'm having the same issue with the numerous failed updates. Watched a youtube video where they said you should clear out the windows/softwaredistribution/downloads folder. I did that and then ran a check for updates.. it found a few more security updates, but no windows 10 installation.

I checked the failed updates and after fiddling around it gave me the option under windows updates

Also don't use any Windows 7 or up with 1 gb had to upgrade my client's laptop to 2 gb so it could run smoothly instead of it 90% memory usage not sure why the manufacturer of Emachines put only 1 gb in and had windows 7 64 bit on it.

How to force the windows 10 update
How to use:
You open windows update first and as it is searching for updates you type this below in the command prompt and press enter and it should force the download, it might take a few times if you not fully updated.

You have to have automatic updates enabled also
wuauclt.exe /updatenow (in command prompt)

A post to assist other people as well

A word of warning to people with a laptop that has a OEM product key in the BIOS

I did an upgrade from 8.1 to 10 and it worked perfectly. I then used the "reset this PC" feature in Windows 10 and it gave me a shiny new Windows 10. I wanted a CLEAN install, and I had read elsewhere that if you go through this UPGRADE process and your Windows 10 (after the upgrade) is Avtivated then you are good to go and do a CLEAN install from USB/DVD media. I used the ISO I downloaded via the MS media creation tool.

I did the clean install and it will NOT activate. It insists that the Product key is blocked. I tried all the manual workaround but nothing will work. Totally bizarre.

So the idea of the activation being "married to the hardware" doesnt quite add up in my mind.

The next step is to reinstall 8.1 and do the upgrade AGAIN (fml) to Windows 10 and I'm going to use a Product key tool to see if it is the same as my legal 8.1 key.

Some people are saying that there will be a different (non-generic) key, other people are saying that it's the same as the 8.1 key.

So much confusion but I am going to get to the bottom of this k@k

A good example below of what I am talking about. The article probably refers to a retail license and not OEM BIOS license. The below will NOT WORK for an OEM license. It does NOT CONVERT the product key.

http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/07/how-to-do-a-clean-install-of-windows-10-from-windows-7-and-8/

This first step will convert your current Windows 7/8 key into a Windows 10 key.

Now you need to install Windows 10 again! Grab the Windows 10 download tool and run it. This time, select "Create installation media for another PC." Select the appropriate version (Home, Pro) and the tool will generate an ISO for you. Let the tool help you burn the ISO to a DVD or USB memory stick.

Now, proceed with a clean installation of Windows 10 (select "Custom: Install Windows only" when prompted.) When it asks you for a product key, click Skip. If it asks you multiple times, just keep hitting Skip.

Once you've installed Windows 10, it should activate normally. Again, you might need to manually slam the servers using slmgr.vbs /ato. Voilà: a clean installation of Windows 10.

OEM clean install info

So, what you actually need to do is update first to be on the safe side. This will register your device with Microsoft and once installed, Windows 10 will receive its own product key and once you’ve located this, you can note it down and use it to install Windows 10 from scratch after you’ve formatted your hard disk or are installing on a new one.

best article source that is accurate I have found

My condolences to every IT guy in the corporate environment having to fix hundreds of pc's

I initially wanted to roll out only to Win8 users but decided to slow down after doing some upgrade tests on a guinea pig machine which didn't go as smooth as i would have wanted. Wouldn't want to deal with user issues with regards to this

Wise move there sir, wise move

Ok, did the upgrade from ISO copied to flashdrive & windows showed activated by the time it was back on the desktop ... hope that's right?

Now for updates ... how do I force them?
Screenshot_1.jpg

the details page shows there's a couple of KB updates for MS Office, but nowhere to click "GO" ... Even left the machine idle for about 2hrs, but nada

No problem hope it works for you, done it to 2 laptops already and got my one in my room still to do, but have to upgrade to Windows 8.1 first.

It worked! Finally have Win10 installed and I am now doing an update to retrieve my display drivers etc. Windows update is really slow though.
