Hi Guys,

I'm having some difficulty in getting Telkom to switch my line to VDSL. My line is syncing fine at 20Mbps but would like to utilize the higher upload speed available on VDSL profiles.

Tried webafrica:

"Sorry, you need to contact Telkom to make the change" ....what the hell? I'm paying you guys to manage my line (and it's the same price as what Telkom charges ?????)

Tried twitter:

They asked me if I had a vdsl modem....2 weeks later and no feedback what so ever.

Tried phoning Telkom (twice):

Both times all they did was a port reset....seems like they don't know what vdsl is...

Even tried TelkomZA on MyBB, haven't received a response yet. (Sent PM yesterday so it might be too soon)

Any suggestions? I'm assuming the line will only sync in either ADSL (2+, G.DMT, ADSL2 etc) or VDSL mode.

Great! Telkom finally changed my profile to VDSL.

DSL Modulation ITU G.993.2(VDSL2)
ANNEX Mode ANNEX A
Current Profile 17a

Down | UP

TCM(Trellis Coded Modulation) On On
SNR Margin 21.2 dB 28.0 dB
Line Attenuation 14.7 dB 2.5 dB
Path Mode Interleaved Interleaved
Interleave Depth 2733 25
Data Rate 20479 kbps 2047 kbps
MAX Rate 81160 kbps 12435 kbps
POWER 13.0 dbm -8.9 dbm
INP 2.0 symbols 2.5 symbols

FYI your line can only sync in one mode, VDSL or ADSL. So if your line syncs at ADSL mode you need to contact Telkom to make the change.

Odd how some people on this forum posted screenshots of their line running on Annex B mode. Anyone know why?

I'm only guessing here but I think it depends if you are connected to a MSAN or ISAM.

Also check your router stats tomorrow, you might just find your down sync rate increased.

Mine is Annex B:

Upgraded to VDSL 20 but does not look like it :(

Status: Up
Mode: ITU G.992.5(ADSL2PLUS)
Type: Annex_A
Traffic Type: ATM
Line Coding: Enable
Up Time: 5719
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 27380 1228
Rate (Kbps): 20479 1022
D (interleave depth): 128 8

If i try switch the mode manually to VDSL2 then it does not connect but on ADSL2+ it does, Telkom says my line is VDSL and ADSL only goes to 10mb not 20.

So now i dont know who is right and what is going on.

I have a TrendNet AC750 Wireless VDSL2/ADSL2+Modem Router.

Hi Pure_Acid,

I had to request the change on Twitter to @HelloTelkom

The normally take +-48 hours.

Had to ask what's happening after 3 days, they "escalated" my request and 24 hour later VDSL.

My speedtest results:

ADSL2+ : 17.5mbps down, +-850 mbps up
VDSL2: 19.1mbps down, 2.1 mbps up.

So it's worth the effort.

Pure_Acid,

Your line will sync in either ADSL mode or VDSL.

So once Telkom made the change it will only sync in VDSL mode.

@User52,

Did you change it to Annex B? Or did you modem do it automatically? Do you have a normal telephone connected to your line? According to Wikipedia Annex B is for ADSL over ISDN, a normal telephone won't work over ISDN.

Why can't Telkom just implement a "web portal" and allow us to change our line profiles ourselves? Seems like America and the UK does it this way.

They even have the option to switch between interleave/fastpath.

@the_all_k

Spoke to CrystalWeb apparently they can see on my number that it looks like an ADSL profile hence i guess my router syncing in ADSL2+ mode.

Told this to a Telkom rep (5th one i have spoken to) , they just state i am on 20mb VDSL, i stated i still want the fault logged and investigated since i should not be able to sync in ADSL2+ mode if i was on a correct VDSL profile.

Why cant the Telkom rep see what the CrystalWeb rep sees on my profile. I feel like the technician is going to go out and see all is fine this guys is connecting at 20MB speed.

@Pure_Acid,

I think it's only the 2nd level support staff who knows what vdsl is. Try twitter...seems like the more senior guys monitor social media.

Switch profile to VDSL on router and call Telkom to log a no sync fault for VDSL.

This will be tried, if my current fault is closed without resolution.

BTW did also post on twitter, apparently support is looking into it.

Now two days later, see ASSIA bumped my sync speed to 22527 kbps.

VDSL 2
ANNEX A

Down Up
TCM(Trellis Coded Modulation) On On
SNR Margin 19.2 dB 28.5 dB
Line Attenuation 14.9 dB 2.5 dB
Path Mode Interleaved Interleaved
Interleave Depth 3007 25

MAX Rate 85648 kbps 11061 kbps
POWER 13.1 dbm -8.0 dbm
INP 2.0 symbols 2.5 symbols
CRC 0

Pity about the high interleave value.

Latency to 8.8.8.8 = 20ms (Same as before the slight bump in sync rate)

I wonder if the ASSIA system will switch my profile to fastpath after a few weeks. Will monitor.

My ADSL modem is on a UPS so I should be able to keep the connection up for a few weeks. This Asus DSL-AC52U modem works great.

Tip for anyone struggling with bad line conditions, try replacing the cable with CAT 5. (from were the black Telkom cable ends and enters your house, there's normally a "connector" block - not sure about the correct name for this one)

Use the blue/wblue cable pair. (You can then use a normal network "wall box", RJ11 connector plugs into it without any issues)

I've done this in 2 homes before with a major improvement in line stats. Telkom uses the cheapest cable they can find for on-premise installations....

Please don't go climbing telephone poles....I just referring to the cable part in your home itself (Normally thin white cable)

Are you referring to the cable that comes from outside into the house, or only the piece from the termination block onwards?

I can see cat5 coming through the air vent in the house, then t block, then cheap wire for about 3 meters.
