HUAWEI B618 LTE-A router discussion thread.

Hi all, lightning hit my house today and fried everything on my network as the primary wiring that it found was my vast Ethernet network.

I’m replacing all of my switches and some Wi-Fi routers because they all fried, but I’m not sure what to get for my main LTE router on Telkom lte. I had the B618 and it was awesome.

What is the current equivalent (I think it’s cat6) that will replace it nicely?

Try Gumtree. Plenty of fibre having folks are letting go of their B618s. I actually have one boxed up but have no plans to let it go yet.

APN not available through the front end. That said, it could be easy to fix. I was informed by Voda that it's network locked.

I got a 618 just last week for my daughter on Gumtree. It's the 22d but still a good choice of modem. I paid 1500 for it. In hindsight I'd get another 535 at the price but not sure if they're available everywhere.

She's on MTN via Afrihost and they have a very short list of supported devices.

The 65d is very hard to find indeed. I also found my 22d on Gumtree.

B618 - with 2 x Deco E4 Mesh - whatsapp calls not always incoming and on the PC which is connected via ethernet the skype and teams sometimes does the same, but when I send a text message through it is like it wakes up the router and then it rings. 2 x A32 samsung phones can do it from time to time when receiving whatsapp calls. Has anyone else came across this? The b618 wifi is turned off and I actually got the Decos to ensure it is not poor connection.

Is it perhaps the b618 Firewall ? Is there a setting to keep connection life ?

If I view the security cameras remotely it connects fine, so it is not like it drops the LTE connection as it has an external antenna. Thanks

The reason for this is because you have the network mode set to 4G only so when you dial *180# the router can not fall back to 3G to do the USSD and then just times out.

You need to change it to Auto if you want to do USSD.

G’day Cavedog - I wonder if this Auto setting also will fix my issue where the b618 seem to go to sleep or is kicked off the tower if there is no data flow for x amount of hours? I used the band tool and set it now to 2300mhz only, however it was on the 1800mhz before and I also had the issue where whatsapp calls sometimes will not ring on the first try, but once I send a text on whatsapp it seems to “wake up” the system and then rings. Is,there a way to have a setting in the b618 “keep alive ping”

Good evening. I am new to this Huawei B618 thread. I currently have my Huawei B618 since 2017 and it has really given me excellent service, until today. For some reason when I power down my B618 it loses my Wi-Fi settings for some reason. Every time I power my B618 up again to use, I have to log into 192.168.8.1 to setup my Wi-Fi settings... AGAIN! Which is starting to become very annoying. I even tried resetting my B618 to set it up again from factory settings, but it still gives to same issue. Other than that, it works fine to connect to the internet, but I can't figure out what is causing it to "lose" it's Wi-Fi settings. I could not find anything on this particular issue, anyone perhaps know what can be done or have a solution for this other than having to go the "buy a new router route? Thank you.

No idea why its doing that, if you can prevent it from turning off by using backup power via mini ups type device, might help a bit but wont solve you issue completely though. Probably best to get another device.

I have exactly the same problem. Now this started after Afrihost instructed me to reset the router to login. They advised me to lock the router into 4G after 2 months of frustratingly slow internet speed. Now I sit with the same issue and Afrihost cannot help to fix it. Very frustrating!

I pulled out my trusty old B618-22d and tested a few sims and found that the Afrihost Pure Fixed LTE works best. MTN Network.

Now the problem I am having is that everytime the power goes out I have to manually setup the router APN to the Afrihost Pure LTE to establish a connection again. It's frustrating as hell.

Any idea how to fix it? I don't mind throwing a router UPS at the thing but something's not right.

Yeah that is a known issue with these routers after a while. Not sure if it's a memory thing or what still have to open mine to see what is going on inside there.

Unfortunately all settings seem to be lost on restart/power cycle. Previously only the apn (the default APNs couldn't be deleted either) had to be reinput but I decided to reset the modem to see if that would solve the issue now it needs to be re-setup (WIFI etc) every time. I imagine there's an issue with actual modem so will be replacing it.

Fok, mines having this issue now as well, previously it would lose settings if it was powered off, now it won't even save the wifi settings when you change them.

It's a B618s-22d, other than this it's a brillaint router, rock solid stable internet.
Other than a mini ups, there must be a way around this issue?

When you reset the device it does save the wifi setting that you input in the first start setup menu so it is possible.
Surely there must be firmware floating around the internet and a reflash may help?

Would pressing the hardware reset button make any difference vs resetting it via the user interface?
