Huawei B970/B970b HSPA Router
I just got my router back from VodaCare. It seems there is hope for those who brick their routers with the SP4 update. The special folk up in Midrand managed to resurrect my router by reflashing it. How they did it I don't know, but with no release notes, upgrade instructions or any more detail than "Software upgrading" on the job sheet I can only predict they will shortly be in a state where they can fix these routers with their eyes closed.
I am once again immensely disappointed with VodaCare Canal Walks' lack of respect for my property, more on that later when I have had a chance to take some pictures of their manhandling and test my router.

@HowTo: Here is my log which does not look anything like yours. It also appears that your log is either old or your system time is horribly out of date (2009-6-16). I suspect you have the logs of a previous E272 update as spotted by ginngs

Well it seems to me it never generated a log file, trying to upgrade.
The result I have given you was then my old E272 modem.
I tried two diffrent ways.
1) Using the application supplied.
2) Using the file upgrade within the vodafone application.

VodaCare Is truely useless on an epic level
I was obviously too optimistic. Plugged my router in and it's in exactly the same state it was when I sent it in. The LAN nor the WLAN initialize when the router boots, so I am VERY curious to know exactly what the monkeys up in Midrand did, because they clearly have not fixed the router or for that matter tested it correctly.

What about the USB port?
I have to assume that's all they tested. I am so fscking angry at this point I could spit. This means another week plus without my router once I have the strength to go back to VodaCare....

The testing lab confirmed that the upgrade is working and upgrade was successful, release notes should be up soon.

Please note that the B970 firmware is back on the Vodacom.co.za website and now includes the upgrade user guide.
This is the same firmware that we used to successfully upgrade our router.

It is still missing crucial information like the fact that you need to be attached to the router using a LAN cable and that if you have changed your internal networking from the default you may have to reset the device before the update will work. It also makes no mention if you should remove your SIM or disable Wifi, things that all could be relevant. A list of bugs fixed would also have been nice. Excluding the missing steps this is exactly the procedure I followed when my router bricked.
My present advice to anyone reading this is to stay away from this update unless you are experiencing the loss of settings bug very often.

I just purchased a Huawei B970 3G router and completed the setup successfuly.
A have a SIM that is registered on the "unrestricted" APN for VPN etc, the problem is that I can;t seem to find a way to specify the APN on the B970, under the profiles you can see the APN as "internet", but it is greyed out and I am unable to specify anything else.
Has anyone else encountered this ?

You need to create a custom profile under one of the other menu options. My router is in for repair so I can't check it for you, but it does exist.

It's supposed to fix (amongst other things) the issue where the router loses all its settings, which I have experienced before.

I did the upgrade for the B970 router.
At first it would not upgrade.
Problem was connected to Vodacom. After disconnecting all went straight forward.
I did a total reset to the B970 router. Installed all settings via ethernet connectivity. Works better.
Changed all my settings which is applicable to me.
Up and running all ok.
