In the days I was using Blackberries, I had my phones replaced at least 10 times. Not once was the IMEI the same. An IMEI is linked to that specific phone for security reasons. It should have not been changed, that's illegal AFAIK
 
Sorry...I thought it was common knowledge that a well equiped service centre have the means to do this if the whole phone or main pcboard have to be replaced. Sometime you just dont have the spares handy so you replace the board and repair the faulty board when you get the spares. Remember you must have the necessary permits and licenses in place to do this work legally.
 
I have downloaded the B506 Kitkat update and am inching to try it, but I am not sure if and how I can load Gapps successfully on an unrooted phone. Have anybody done this?

When they are "authorised" to do this, then the hardware serials must be updated with the IMEI accordingly, thus this needs to be reported via the repair shop to your cellular network provider.
 
Huawei news had this to say about the B506 firmware:

"The wait is over for the Ascend P6 owners who were waiting for the Android 4.4 KitKat update for Huawei’s most popular smartphone Ascend P6. After numerous push backs and false promises Huawei released the Android 4.4.2 KitKat firmware update today for the Chinese Unicom Ascend P6 owners. Its not available yet for the international version of the phone but if you are reading this post we guess you most likely know your way around when it comes to flashing custom ROM’s and installing official firmwares. As we said earlier this firmware is intended for China, but its compatible with your international Ascend P6-U06 with few quirks such as Google Apps not being installed by default.
 
Hi guys, Peit asked me to explain the process of getting vanilla droid onto the P6.

Short answer is "You don't", Huawei are very closed with their software, specifically drivers so its difficult in most cases for developers to make custom roms for it, to the best of my knowledge only 2 custom roms exist and neither are that great as they have problems, mostly related to drivers. The big boys like cyanogen and Myui do not even bother trying.

However after almost a year with my P6 I can personally not think of 1 good, actually I cannot even think of a bad reason, to install a custom rom. Of all the phones out there, short of the nexus itself it is the closes to vanilla I have seen. Huawei have gone through a lot of trouble to not overly customize the phone like Samsung has done, Emotion is very close to original with mainly colour and icon changes and I have a nexus to compare with.

They already rolling out Kitkat, its begun in China and expected internationally within the next few weeks, the latest Emotion appears to be even less customized and more streamlined. Yet comparing 1.6 with Vanilla I can not see much difference, except the white BG, light blue lines and custom settings icons, as far as I can tell the only additional app they added was RipTide and few actually useful widgets.

That's my Opinion, I used custom roms before when I was with Samsung, but that's because they take months to update their firmware and then vodacon takes another few decades to approve it.
Also not keen on installing a minor rom on my phone, if it was Cyanogen of PA then it would be a dif story, buy Hydro could get bored and bugger off and then you sit with 99% of a working rom.
 
I do need a compass from time to time when we install directional antennas and if I can use the one in my P6 I dont have to carry one with me. I did test it a while back and it looked fairly accurate so yesterday I decided to compare it with a good magnetic. To my dismay it was suddenly of with about 80 degrees.I tried to calibrate it with figure 8 movements but no luck. Eventually I remembered that I had installed WiFi at home and this may effect it. After I disabled the WiFi on my P6 it functioned perfectly: So you have a very accurate compass on the P6 just make sure you are not connected to WiFi !

Vodacom has **** all to do with it, once Huawei release it, we will get it. Vodacom only screws around with Samsung and HTC as they have to put their own custom **** into it.

They do add some bloatware to the Huawei as well and they will probably make you wait like they do for Samsung if you want the OTA update. If not, then download the file and flash it yourself (similarly like it can be done using Odin on a Samsung)

Nothing like odin, download the file, stick it on your phone, reboot. It will detect it and update automatically provided its a compatible update.

Odin: Download the file, install it via Odin, phone reboots. Sounds similar, no??:p Only difference is that Odin can do more and obviously is done via a PC rather than on the device itself
