iBurst Open DC++ Hub FAQ/GUIDE

Yeah, it's dead all right. It used to be a very sweet loophole, but now it's been closed by THE MAN.

Only plus side: I haven't managed to hit my cap yet. Up till now, I usually hit it by the third of the month!

Anyone figured out any workarounds to ibursts block on dc++ yet? Perhaps another p2p solution that works on iburst?

Perhaps Soulseek? That's one of the few programs uneffected by the horrid shaping though I'm not sure what kind of material can be shared on it or how iburst to iburst speeds to would be.

PM me if anyone has ideas but doesn't want to publicize them.

The hub added tremendous value to iburst and is the main reason why me and many others signed up in the first place, it's a real pity they had to destroy something that used INTERNAL bandwidth only. (Meaning it cost them nothing at all)

The Openweb one, can't remember the exact name.

Openweb one isn't the iburst hub, it's only good for adsl users. On iburst you'll get speeds not even worth flinging poo at with our shaping blocking the dc++ protocol almost completely.

So yup, the hub pretty much died about 6 months ago when iBurst finally figured out how to shape it's traffic. :'(

;(

yeah, its a shame they had to shape it. and i somewhat doubt any other p2p app would work. even if it did, theyd only shape that too after a while.

our only other choice really, is to go with something they cannot possibly shape.. its not as convenient and user friendly as dc++, but it worked..and prolly still does..

ftp..

users host whatever on ftp, and we share that info on irc. of course if iburst wasnt already shaping dcc we couldve gone with that, but ya.. 2 to 7kb/s wont do..

y/n?

It's possible though I do remember trying something similar with a member of the hub (when it was still active) and not having much luck at the time, but perhaps like with the hub (where you had to reconnect tons of times to get a good linking) it's a bit temperamental?

The only real problem would be having to set up dyndns & ftp for all new users and making sure they actually do share.

Anyone else have anything to add to the idea? Or anyone willing to set one up and test it sometime? (Just remember if it works anything like the hub did, BOTH users would need to be capped)

Hmmm, pm me what needs to be done. I'm only on the R469 super surfer thingy, but i normally cap myself in the first day anyways. I wouldnt mind giving it a try :)
I've got a 'server' that can be utilizied, just tell me what needs to be done ..

(i've also got tons to share)

Wonder if there is a way to encrypt connections .. hmmm ... pf/encryption/*nix/thinking/books/coffee .... time for a project ...

if it didnt have that 14 (think its 14 ) user limit, hamachi wouldve been perfect. and there doesnt seem to be any decent alternative to hamachi atm..

getting ppl to share is a problem yeah :< but i dont quite understand why though, i mean theyre capped.. .. .. so wtf? if however they dont share, dont wish to share, or something ghey like that.. they can easily be banned from the channel..

as for the dyndns and ftp setup.. http should work just as well..
HFS (free http server + dyndns client for noobs):

riverdusty and i will be testing the ftp thing sometime today..

I myself never really understood why some chose not to share on the hub but we did unfortunately have 1 or 2 lads guilty of just that. One of the guys even went as far as to share his 1TB collection BUT use netlimiter to limit his upload speed to 1kBs which made us all cry jellybaby tears.

Regardless....your http server solution sounds right on the money! Good luck testing it today then but do remember that it *might* require several disconnections and reconnections (on the part of your iburst modem) to get a "good" link, of course that was only how the crazy old hub used to work but chances are that anything using the iburst network could be just as crazy.

okay then..

since i havent heard from riverdusty for like.. 2 days now.. anyone else capped yet?

I'm already capped myself, if you've set up the server on your side already then share one or 2 medium sized files, pm me ze linkage (with login details if neccassery) and I'll gogogadgetget to testing it!

iBurst cape town are having some serous issues. They even have orange ticks on their website under 'network status' yet they haven't said what the technical issues are. I've been very very slow lately.

I'm also fighting with them about conforming to RFC standards. They have the crappies network setup I've ever seen. I'm surprised the mail servers do rDNS, even tho they do it all wrong and the Reporting-MTA is different from the Received-From-MTA .. i mean .. this is 3 lines in two files (named.conf and iburstgroup.co.za.db).

I bet iburst hired a bunch of failed MCSEs .. might even find a few RHCEs in there somewhere ...

But not to fear, I'm on the case, just got several other rather large projects on at the moment, like you know .. starting my own company.

http://adc.sourceforge.net/ADC.html

This is what we should be looking at. Set something up before iBurst knows whats hit them. It can do ssl and stuff so we can encrypt all channels, so iBurst wont even know whats going on.

I'm looking into it but my poor server is sitting somewhere on a floor. All these power cuts are damaging. I need to set something up that'll be rather stable.

Will keep all informed.

How would one go about setting this ADC up? I'm a windows lad myself and looking through that page I see more command line content than I did when I used dos 15 years ago....which kinda leads me to believe it requires linux or some such?

If someone (such as RD when you get your server back up) can set it up and give instructions on joining I'm sure tons would be willing to test it out and see if it works.

As for the http/ftp-server higher than capped speeds APPEAR to be possible. I've managed 18kBs while capped off anon during this evening and when you consider that it might work like the hub did, it means that you can have multiple downloads with no slow down at all (meaning 18kBs from one user, maybe 4 from another, 20 from a third and so on all at once)

The problem right now is that it needs to be tested with more people to make sure it's not just a fluke, so if anyone else wants to test, set up a server and let me know or do it privately if you prefer and just let me know if the results are good.

Another note is that it REQUIRES the same ip change trick the hub did (read page one of this post about getting a good ip) which sometimes means 10-20 ip resets before a high speed is obtained.

THE HUB MAYBE SORTA KINDA LIVES ONCE MORE!

In some late night testing using adc it appears that we managed to get decent above cap threshold speeds (after a few ip resets) but we'll need more users to test it properly before making this thing official. If more (capped!) people want to try test it out with us pm me or anon and we'll send you the address.

Riverdustycreature, how might we setup encryption using adc? Could you send anon the details? Or setup an encrypted server on your side?

Would like to prevent this method from dying like the standard old dc++ did.

I'll look into it. The Hubs i've looked at have an option for ssl. Problem is we'd need to enforce it which means tutorials and 'supported ssl clients' and stuff like that. I say we need to enforce it because if anything is unencrypted, iBurst will pick up on it. (we know they dont read these forums, so its safe to discuss lol)
Let me get my server up and running and we can experiment.
